An old-school women's picture, Nikhil Advani's tale of doomed romance and noble self sacrifice is set in modern-day New York City but shot in the over-the-top style of Bollywood musicals. Pretty , sensible and oh-so-serious Naina (Preity Zinta), whose father committed suicide some years earlier, lives at home with her squabbling mother and grandmother. She's studying for a business degree at NYU and wears the kind of glasses that once signified that knockout beauties like Marilyn Monroe were to be taken for mousey librarians. Her extended Punjabi family wants nothing more than for her to get married, but her father's death has left her afraid of love. Though she occasionally flirts with fellow student Rohit (Saif Ali Khan), a shy fellow from a wealthy family, it takes vivacious new neighbor Aman (Shah Rukh Khan, a superstar in India) to help her lighten up. Aman, the sort of crazy, sieze-the-moment optimist who thinks nothing of hopping onto the hood of a taxi and belting out "Pretty Woman" (in Hindi, yet). Naina begins to fall in love with him, but he not only steers her in Rohit's direction but actively helps Rohit win her heart. Aman's willingness to help another man win the woman he clearly loves is explained in a not-too-shocking twist: Aman has a weak heart — he's in New York to visit a specialist — and isn't long for this world. Old fashioned, extremely decorous by American standards amd filled with catchy songs and lavish musical numbers.
