Time bandit: Jean Reno with Christina Applegate
starstarstarstar
A Frenchman-out-of-water comedy. Jean Reno and Christian Clavier reprise their roles from the 1993 medieval time-travel tale LES VISITEURS, one of France's highest-grossing homegrown films — in both senses of the term "gross." A cheerfully vulgar, slapstick adventure with farcically intricate plot machinations, the original fared less-than-spectacularly in the U.S., making the reasons behind this English-language redux all the more confounding. A movie about growing up at the movies, she-demons vs. holy man, a time-travel comedy and more!Question: I love reading your weekly column and know you'll be able to help me. I can't remember the name of an Italian movie I saw in the late 1980s or early '90s. It's about a boy growing up in a small village; he spends a lot of time at the cinema and the man who runs it becomes a father figure to him. The church requires that the man cut out any kissing scenes before the movies are shown and the boy is always trying to look at the deleted scenes, which the man keeps in a box. Lots of stuff I don't remember happens in the middle, but the boy grows up and I think he becomes a filmmaker. When the old man dies, the boy — now a man — returns to the village and finds that the man spliced together all the kissing scenes to create a "movie" and left it for him. I remember it being a very moving story and would like to share it with my friends, but I don't remember the title and I... read more

Ask FlickChick: Top Five Guilty Movie Pleasures and More....Question: I like challenging, thought-provoking movies as much as the next guy, but I also love pure, unadulterated cheese — real Mystery Science Theater 3000-quality junk. My biggest guilty pleasure is Ed Wood movies. Do you have any guilty pleasures, or are you strictly into quality movies? — EliFlickChick: Oh, I have a soft spot for junk. I also have a rant about guilty pleasures — indulge me, please — that goes something like this: The fact that you love Plan 9 from Outer Space (1959) doesn't inherently make you stupid or invalidate your love for Citizen Kane (1941), so stand by your low-brow passions! There. Now here are my top five really trashy movie faves, in ascending order. 5) Barbarella (1968)What it is: a sexadelic adaptation of the erotic comic series about a beautiful space tart (Jane Fonda) — sorry, astronavigatrex — and her adventures across the universe. What's so bad: Tacky,... read more
