Intermittently amusing, forgettable action spoof showcasing Whoopi Goldberg and helmed by Penny Marshall. Goldberg plays Terri Doolittle, a computer processor at a New York City bank whose vast knowledge allows her to communicate in cyberspace with techies all over the globe. She begins

receiving computer messages from the title character (Jonathan Pryce), a British agent trapped behind the Iron Curtain. Because Terri is a fan of old spy movies, she decides to help Jack out, and shortly gets sucked into a dangerous world of spooks and villains. Not much is done here with

Goldberg's formidable comic talents; she merely runs through a predictable series of slapstick sequences. The film's real failings, however, are the result of the substantial problems that plagued its production. The original director, Howard Zieff, was fired over "creative differences" and was

quickly replaced by Marshall, whose direction here is only passable. Because the film's original screenwriters left with Zieff, the script was still being written while shooting was in progress, which probably accounts for the helter-skelter plot and the underdeveloped characterizations.
