Spadaro, a popular Italian screen comic, is an accountant rewarded with money for his honesty. He takes it and goes on vacation from his nagging family. Along the way, he flirts with Lo Guidice, a thief claiming to be a countess who steals his wallet. He arrives in Rome broke, wearing

painfully tight shoes. Unable to find a place to stay, and in great discomfort, he joins a pilgrimage visiting St. Peter's Square during Holy Year, wanders around the city, and finally takes employment as a gardener in a monastery. Upon hearing his son is ill, he returns home. Although Spadaro is

funny in his role, too much of the script pretends to be a Chaplin-style pathos/comedy, and never quite makes it. His wanderings around Rome may look like a travelog to American viewers, with some nice footage of the Pope cut into the action. Lo Guidice is interesting in her minor role.
