Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr
starstarstarstar
The suit is cool, but IRON MAN belongs to Robert Downey, Jr.: His effortlessly nuanced performance as Tony Stark, a heedless, billionaire playboy arms manufacturer cast into a brutal crucible that forces a top-to-bottom reassessment of his life so far, is a dark delight that combines pop-culture wit and genuine emotional depth. Brilliant, hedonistic industrialist Tony Stark (Downey) inherited a clutch of companies invested in everything from medical research to alternative... read more

  • Summer 2008 Box Office on Record-Setting Pace | Movie News | 8/29/2008 New
The Dark Knight ruled theaters, but the summer box office was not dark at all.According to The Hollywood Reporter, summer 2008 can go down in history with a record domestic gross, thanks to the $300 million-plus hauls of Knight, Iron Man and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.Though last summer had four films cross the $300 milestone, Knight made up for the deficit with its own record-setting performance, which includes four consecutive weeks at No. 1.By the close of Labor Day weekend, domestic intake is projected to surpass $4 billion. read more
  • Downey Jr. to Fight More Crime as Sherlock Holmes | Movie News | 7/10/2008
Making his first professional move since trampling box offices as Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. has taken the role of Sherlock Holmes in the upcoming, eponymous drama from Warner Bros. Guy Ritchie (aka Mrs. Madonna) will direct, leaving fingers crossed we'll get some Lock, Stock-style grit and shoot-em-up action. If the movie sounds familiar, it's because it is: Columbia Pictures is putting together a comedic take on the classic tale with Sacha Baron Cohen and Will Ferrell — at least, we're assuming it will be a comedy.Shooting for Downey's crime-solving movie will kick off in October. In the meantime: Which version would you rather see? (Think: A pipe-smoking Borat vs. Iron Man in a cloak. I know. It's a tough one.) — Anna DimondRelated:• Meet the New Sherlock and Watson: Baron Cohen and Ferrell read more
  • Robert Downey, Jr. in Talks to Fly into His Next Big Role | Movie News | 6/16/2008
Hot off his mega-Iron Man success, Robert Downey Jr. is in talks to saddle up for his next big role, in the Brian Grazer-Ron Howard film Cowboys & Aliens. Per the Reporter, the movie would be a mix of the sci-fi and Western genres for what will likely be a tongue-in-cheek take on the mélange, and is set to hit theaters in 2010.The role would be Downey's first deal since smashing the box office competition as Iron Man. In the meantime, while the talks continue for the Cowboys role, audiences can get more of the steely hero in Tropic Thunder this August, and The Soloist in November. Are you pining for more of Downey Jr. in blockbuster type of roles, or wish he'd return to the sensitive fare that was Less Than Zero? With any luck, his next roles will be a little bit of both. — Anna DimondRelated Movie News:• Movie Train Will Roll into Comic-Con• Iron Man vs. Speed Racer: Start Your Engines• Marvel: Iron Man 2 on the Way read more
  • Movie Train Will Roll into Comic-Con | Movie News | 6/13/2008
Let the Comic-Con gimmicks begin! Last year, one of the most buzzed-about appearances at the huge San Diego festival was made by a full-scale suit from the Iron Man movie. Iron Man (you may have heard) went on to be this summer's biggest films, grossing $288 million in six weeks. In order to piggyback off the success of early promotional buzz, more and more movie studios are introducing their films in big ways at Comic-Con. Case in point: Walden Media (aka the Chronicles of Narnia people) will launch "one of the most ambitious Comic-Con marketing stunts ever" for its upcoming film City of Ember, starring Bill Murray. Per Variety, Walden will re-create the mythical city from the film on a private two-car train. The coolest part? The train will take 25 members of the media on a two-hour journey to the convention's San Diego locale. • Today's Stars... Yesterday! Who Have You Spotted? | DVD News and Reviews | 5/23/2008
With the long Memorial Day holiday this weekend, let's have some fun and play a game! We've actually played this game before, last October. I had a different blog back then, called "DVD Guy", and I called the game "Today's Stars...Yesterday!" We all had a great deal of fun, and lots of readers chimed in with their own examples of big-name celebs they've seen "in smaller roles, during leaner times".The way to play is very simple: Think of hot "new" stars that you see in any current TV show, and try to think of where you've spotted them on DVDs of older programs. Probably only slightly older shows, but there's absolutely no limit. Let's just have a blast with it! I'll give us several examples, just to get us started:• Grey's Anatomy wrapped their fourth season last night, and the younger Dr. Grey wrapped her first full season in the show. Chyler Leigh's straight-laced turn as "Lexi" might not make her recognizable, though, to the few of us who saw her as punk-rockin',... read more
