This interesting, offbeat, and sometimes confusing western stars Brynner as an educated half-black, half-Creole gunfighter named Jules Gaspard D'Estaing. He is hired by Hingle to kill Confederate veteran Segal, who has returned to his hometown after the war only to find that his property has been sold (by Hingle), that his former fiancee (Ruth) has married a Union soldier, and that his neighbors are Union sympathizers aligned against him. After Segal kills the new owner of his property, he barricades himself inside. Enter Brynner, who has a penchant for killing white folks, though only after they correct their pronunciation of his name. However, Brynner becomes uncontrollable and, in a weird twist of script, Hingle hires Segal to kill the hired gunman. The story ends with Brynner killed by his intended victim.
