Nifty, atmospheric science fiction film. Hunt is a young boy who wakes in the middle of the night after hearing strange noises outside the house. He sees a spaceship land and burrow itself into the earth. Erickson, his father, goes out to investigate but returns with a strange air about

him. Soon his mother is the same way, and Hunt discovers radios buried in their necks. When a neighbor girl disappears into the ground, he calls the police but to no avail. More people are controlled by the Martians until psychologist Carter and astronomer Franz come to help. Hunt and Carter are

kidnaped by the creatures but saved in the nick of time by Ankrum, an Army colonel who sends his troops in to destroy the Martian ship. The film ends with Hunter waking up; he has dreamed it all. As he realizes it's all been a dream, the same noise he heard at the beginning happens once more. This

is an unusual and well thought out film. Originally to be shot in 3-D, this was the first film of its type to be shot in color. A longer European version ends differently: the awakening is replaced by an additional scene in an observatory.
