Yet another movie about South Africa that focuses squarely on the plight of a white man. What was executive producer Lou Gossett, Jr. thinking? Accused of conspiring against the racist regime, university professor Marty Strydom (Eric Stoltz) is imprisoned,

brutalized and interrogated by Colonel Kruger (Nigel Hawthorne, reveling in the rolled r's of his Afrikaner accent). Convinced by Kruger that his friends and family have all abandoned him, Strydom hangs himself: Perhaps that's why his name scans like martyrdom.Ten years later, after

the abolition of Apartheid, Kruger must answer for his crimes to a black interrogator (Gossett), who was imprisoned next to Strydom. Arthur Penn's stagy direction does nothing to goose up an already talky piece, and the blunt script never permits the actors to develop the kind of performances that

might compensate for its lack of subtlety. Gossett plays to the back rows, right up to the La Pieta moment in which he cradles Strydom's despondent father in his succoring arms. And is it paranoid to ask why a black prisoner is hurled against a door in close up, sending blood and teeth spattering

everywhere, while Kruger's eventual beating is, by contrast, far more discreetly handled?
