Chevalier makes his American debut as a junkman who saves a boy from drowning in the Seine after the child's mother tries suicide/murder. Unable to save the mother, he takes the boy to his grandfather, meets Beecher, the boy's aunt, and falls in love. After doing a few of his wonderful

songs in the Flea Market, Chevalier is hired by Miljan and Livingston to sing in their theater. Beecher is afraid Chevalier will take a liking to the chorus cuties and begs him to give it all up, to no avail. Initially, Chevalier was against doing the film on the basis of its weak script. But he

gave in after Paramount agreed to let him sing some of the songs he had made his name with in France. Thus we get to hear the French version of "Yes, We have No Bananas" ("Les Ananas"), and "Dites-Moi, Ma Mere." Best of all, Chevalier sang what was to become one of his best loved numbers,

"Louise." Other than that, the film is a dud. The script is banal and direction is lifeless. Nevertheless, Chevalier's wonderful talents rose above the material, and he became an overnight sensation in America. Critics compared him with Chaplin, and he went on to become a film archetype of suavity

and charm. Other songs include "Wait Till You See My Cherie," "It's A Habit of Mine," "On Top of the World Alone" (Richard A. Whiting, Leo Robin), "Valentine" (Henri Christine, Herbert Reynolds).
