Originally billed as a revealing look at the exotic wildlife of the African jungle and as a true-life adventure, INGAGI created quite a stir when it was released and could easily be called one of the first great film scams. Supposedly recounting the adventures of two men on an expedition

into Africa, the film combines some poorly shot jungle footage (taken back in 1914) with studio footage of Gemora in gorilla garb attacking native girls. The makers also created their own animals, taking a tortoise and putting an armadillo shell on its back, for example. Several different groups

protested against the gross inaccuracies concerning African natural history and a scene in which a "virgin sacrifice" is played topless. In fact, the state of New York would not allow it to be shown for several months. All this publicity only helped to boost consumer interest, as INGAGI was made

on a virtual shoestring budget but grossed well over $4,000,000. INGAGI fits more under the heading of circus entertainment than of cinema.
