Director Luigi Magni has given history a popular, youthful slant in this story, set in 1867 as troops are about to enter Rome in the name of separating the powers of the State from those of the Pope. Nino Manfredi is Don Colombo, a Papal magistrate whose troubled conscience and hope for

a less authoritarian government has driven him to submit his resignation. Before he can do so, however, a band of young terrorists bomb a garrison at Zouave, and more pressure is placed on the already torn Don Colombo when he learns that one of the terrorists is the son he fathered illegitimately

some 20 years earlier. While it is a bit slow and talky for those unfamiliar with the government of the Papal States, IN THE NAME OF THE POPE KING is a relatively accessible film with a fine performance from Manfredi that falls somewhere between the comic and the tragic. (In Italian; English

subtitles.)
