I'm Not Rappaport: Review

Bench warmers: Walter Matthau and Ossie Davis

Director Herb Gardner's adaptation of his own award-winning Broadway play is a bittersweet comedy about a pair of New York survivors. Eighty-one-year-old Nat Moyer (Walter Matthau) is a Jewish radical of the old school: A combative philosopher, fanciful talker and, some might even say, a liar. His daily companion on a Manhattan park bench is another octogenarian, Midge Carter (Ossie Davis), a half-blind superintendent whose more realistic approach to life makes him the prefect foil for Nat. The two oldsters spar verbally and take on a variety of social ills, including drug dealers, muggers, forced retirement and the specter of the old-folks' home. Gardner shot most of the film in New York's Central Park, and Adam Holender's cinematography provides authentic New York flavor. Veterans Matthau and Davis are totally in tune with each other, and their neatly executed exchanges provide much of the film's wry humor. Amy Irving is the sympathetic daughter who can't seem to please the irascible Nat, and Martha Plimpton makes the most of her struggling-artist role, though a subplot involving her liaison with a drug pusher doesn't ring true. Elina Lowensohn -- NADJA's terminally cool vampire -- is riveting as Claire Lemlich, a real-life political firebrand who inspired Nat in his younger days.
