Simone Signoret gives a touching performance here as Louise, an aging woman whose devotion to her paralyzed, wheelchair-bound brother, Gilles (Jean Rochefort), has prevented her from tasting the sweeter things in life. Neither sibling has much contact with the outside world--Gilles gazes

at the Atlantic through his telescope, Louise dreams of taking a vacation to America--except through their close friend Yvette (Delphine Seyrig), an aging local baker who has a fondness for Gilles. Hoping to find a mate, Louise places an ad in the local newspaper to that effect and receives only

one response--from Gilles. Rather than reveal herself to him, the needy Louise continues to correspond under the nom de plume Beatrice Deschamps, eagerly awaiting his increasingly amorous and erotic letters until the time comes for "Beatrice" to meet Gilles.

This slow-moving story, which reteams director Moshe Mizrahi and Signoret after their Oscar-winning MADAME ROSA, relies chiefly on its three poignant and sensitive performances. Signoret, Rochefort, and Seyrig never look like glamourous movie stars, instead completely capturing the mannerisms of

aging adults frustrated by the monotony of their day-to-day existence. Despite some complex ideas in Gerard Brach's script, Mizrahi's direction is a trifle plodding.
