With this film, producer-director-writer Brandner took the very popular German Heimat (village) movie (which usually depicted solid, rural, family values) and turned it on its head. Set in the near future, Brandner's village is populated by emotionless citizens, kept in place with pills and

pleasures. Once a year the wealthy people arrive to hunt in a nearby area, where the villagers are never allowed. One day a new citizen begins hunting illegally out of a simple desire to do something different. A strange, homosexual gamekeeper spots him, and the two begin an affair. They attempt

to stage an uprising but are shot down. This is a grim, disheartening film not because the film itself is disturbing but because the message conveyed--that only anarchy and terrorism as perpetrated by social outcasts can bring an end to the mindless existence of the majority--is short-sighted and

scary.
