When was the last time you saw a really good revenuer flick? Would you settle for a not-so-good one? The wisteria and whiskey fumes hang heavy over this star-crossed lovers' escapade about undistilled passion and illegally distilled booze in the 1930s. Psychologically scarred

by World War I, burned-out veteran Turner (Keith Carradine) returns to Samuels Mountain where feels a stirrin' in his heart and loins over backwoods babe Flo Samuels (Hayley DuMond). Unbeknownst to Turner, skinny-dipping Flo has a violently jealous papa, Clayton (Burt Reynolds), who's already

murdered Flo's adulterous mother and any suitor who's ever sneaked a peek at Flo's nubile charms. In a plot-twist that could be called "The Most Dangerous Dating Game," possessive Clayton tracks down Turner without reckoning with the soldier's military savvy. After unearthing the corpses of

Clayton's victims, Turner convinces Flo to start packing. Meanwhile, miffed that Judge Tully (Pat Hingle) has allowed a sheriff to muscle in on Clayton's brew-works, Clayton eliminates the Judge, the sheriff, and several federal agents. Eventually, Turner ends the rampage with a bullet to

Clayton's forehead. Throughout, whiskey czar Clayton gets knocked down and resuscitated so many times, you'll feel as if you're watching a down-home remake of HALLOWEEN. As the tetchy patriarch, Reynolds bares his teeth in the febrile style of Rod Steiger and inches this action pic into camp

territory. Besides, how can one respect a bad guy who falls for every one of his nemesis's booby traps? Fortunately, Carradine and newcomer DuMond lend credibility to their romantic entanglements. Crisply photographed, this heady blend of moonlight and moonshine is like GOD'S LITTLE ACRE

revisited, only less artistic territory is covered.
