Superb Wyatt Earp saga, more or less a sequel to GUNFIGHT AT THE O.K. CORRAL, has Garner as the legendary lawman. The solemn Sturges western, taut and tight in every scene, begins with the celebrated gunfight and goes on to show how Garner's brothers, Converse and Melville, are ambushed by

gunslingers in the employ of rustler Ryan. Garner slowly succumbs to vengeance, losing his high moral principles and disregarding the law. He deputizes his best friend, gunman Robards--playing the role of the famous Doc Holliday--and gathers a small posse to search for his brothers' killers. One

by one he hunts them down and kills them himself, including Ryan whom he tracks across the border into Mexico. Robards follows his friend through one state after another, watching and helping him gun down the killers, but gaining a sense of morality where Garner appears to lose his own.

An interesting, often absorbing offbeat western with excellent production values. Garner is effective as the grim, unswerving lawman, and Robards is jocularly right as the savvy but deadly Holliday. Ryan as gang leader Ike Clanton registers high as do Ihnat, Tolan, and Phillips as the gunmen who

killed the Earp Brothers. Future star Voight appears in a small role as lethal gunman Curly Bill Brocius. The script is intelligent and witty; its author Anhalt appears in a bit role as a medic who keeps Robards company at the end when the tubercular gunman goes to a Colorado sanitarium to die

which, in reality, is how Holliday's life ended.
