Dan Bartlett (John Cusack), a prep school student, is an overachiever who studies so hard that he fights a losing battle with exhaustion and flunks a chemistry test. As a result he must take a makeup test during Easter vacation--a time he is supposed to spend sailing with his cheerleader

girl friend, Lori (Wendy Gazelle), and her family. His teacher has a change of heart and excuses him from the exam. Dan hurries to the airport, but the plane has just taken off. Determined to catch Lori, Dan boards the next plane to the Caribbean. Numerable mishaps follow, always leaving Dan just

one step behind the family until he runs into a sea captain (Robert Loggia). Limping along on a scant plot, HOT PURSUIT succeeds largely because of Cusack's handling of his character. Loggia is always a pleasure to watch, even when his part is as mindless as it is here.
