This routine oater has Montgomery as a U.S. marshal in charge of four criminals: Gordon, a child murderer, Emhardt, a corrupt railway executive convicted on graft charges, Gonzalez-Gonzalez, a goat thief who looks forward to learning a trade in prison, and De Carlo, a dance-hall girl who

shot her two-timing lover. Their prison wagon journeys across the Texas badlands. Riding shotgun for Montgomery is Hunter, a hotheaded, naive young deputy. During the four-day trek, De Carlo attempts to seduce Hunter into letting her go, and nearly succeeds, until Montgomery throws the gullible

kid in with the crooks, so he has no chance of being swayed from his duty. The small band is besieged by Emhardt's vicious relatives who have arrived to break him out. Realizing that Montgomery will never be able to fight off the killers alone, De Carlo convinces Hunter that she doesn't really

love him, and Hunter talks Montgomery into letting him help fight off the attack. Together the lawmen rout the gunslingers and complete their mission. The film has some interest due to cameos by such veteran oater stars as Arlen, Donlevy, Knight, and Barry.
