This well-crafted comedy concerns top-drawer CIA agent Miles Kendig (Walter Matthau), who is demoted to managing the office files by his bureaucratic boss (Ned Beatty). Miles takes off for Europe and meets Mikhail Yaskov (Herbert Lom), an old friend and Soviet agent, who suggests Miles

write his memoirs. Taken with the idea, Miles flies off to Salzburg and meets Isobel von Schmidt (Glenda Jackson), an old flame who is also a former agent. She provides support as he begins writing a book that will expose the secrets of world espionage.

A thoroughly entertaining picture, HOPSCOTCH is based on a serious spy novel. The casting of Matthau, however, changed that premise, and the film's most enjoyable aspect is his character's playfulness as he turns the CIA on its head. An unlikely pair, Matthau and Jackson build on the interesting

chemistry they developed in HOUSE CALLS. If it's a classically styled throwback to Hollywood espionage films of the 1940s and 1950s you're looking for, HOPSCOTCH is it.
