Having been given the heave-ho by his wife Shirley (Nancy Allen), lonely Charles Duprey (William Forsythe) takes off for a Reno vacation. A good samaritan, Charles gives a lift to Hunter (James Legros), a magpie motorist with car trouble. After Hunter starts mouthing off about killing people, Charles wisely ditches him at a rest stop. Forced backward by a landslide, Charles checks into a seedy motel, where he spends the night with the establishment's strung-out waitress cum hooker Zeena (Elizabeth Pena). And guess who joins them? Having hitched his way back into Charles's life, Hunter slices up Zeena and a motel clerk. Confronting Hunter later in a locked-up tavern, Charles learns that someone has ordered a hit on him, a shocking revelation that enables this Walter Mitty-esque character to strike back. However, can Charles prevail against an expert terminator, even one who's underestimated him? After listening to Hunter's philosophical bullshitting, it does come as a shock to learn that he's a contract killer and not some garden variety nutcase, but even that surprise can't redeem a script that chokes on flashbacks to Charles's troubled marriage and crawls to a halt with repetitive chase sequences. The biggest drawback in this lame rip-off of the gleefully nasty cult film HITCHER, however, is the bulky presence of Forsythe. Unlike Robert Davi, who graduated from playing villains to B-movie leading man status, the innately menacing Forsythe doesn't elicit the audience's sympathy. He's no match for the sneakily resourceful Legros, either.
