A whimsical tale capturing the escapades of an eccentric family united by their rural family estate, Sacham Farm, but driven apart by conflicting desires and pursuits. Rufus Sewell plays the determined but misguided Ross, whose trail of financial fiascoes has left him deep in debt. He is dependent on the patience and cash flow of his successful and somewhat uptight fiancée Kendal (Minnie Driver). Desperate (yet again) to make his fortune, Ross plans to sell off the family's priceless wine collection to purchase an abandoned manganese mine adjacent to Sacham Farm. Kendal has endured one too many of his far-fetched, get rich quick schemes, and this latest threatens to end their already tenuous romance. Another obstacle to Ross' success is his philosophical Uncle Cullen (Nigel Hawthorne), a sage soul who has quite different plans for the family estate. The tension is eased by Ross’ little brother, a sweet reclusive savant with a green thumb, at work on a mysterious garden utopia somewhere just out of sight. Kendal’s houseguest, a radiant naïf with doe-like eyes, is the key ingredient to bring the bubbling brew to a boil and conspires with Uncle Cullen to bring about harmonic balance among the unruly clan. Refreshing performances succeed in overcoming a somewhat disjointed first act, but the film evolves into a warm and inviting tale of human foibles and the search for contentment.
