A feeble attempt at bringing passion to the screen, HEAT OF DESIRE stars Dewaere as a foolish lecturer who is about to take his wife with him to Barcelona for a speaking engagement. Fate intervenes, however, and he becomes the object of another woman's desire. The bored mistress of a

politician, Goldsmith, decides to have a steamy affair with the first man who walks by her window--Dewaere. They run off to Barcelona together, leaving behind Dewaere's wife, and there he devotes all his time and money to Goldsmith, who enjoys nothing more than playing sex games in posh hotel

rooms. Of course, she is also mysterious, unpredictable, exotic, and exciting, and Dewaere steadily deteriorates, embarrassing himself during his lecture and finally finding himself penniless, having to steal in order to see Goldsmith. Once again a filmmaker falls flat trying to repeat the success

of LAST TANGO IN PARIS--an intelligent, artistic film revolving around sexual desire. HEAT OF DESIRE is a meaningless morality tale about passion and its consequences that predictably shows Goldsmith's psychological domination, Dewaere's downfall, and a great deal of flesh. The film is perhaps

worth watching, however, just for the sensational Dewaere, who plays a role that is far more subdued than those he has done for Bertrand Blier. Knowing that Dewaere committed suicide not long after the completion of this film makes his character's downfall frighteningly real. (In French; with

English subtitles.)
