Labored adaptation of A.J. Cronin's novel about a shipload of passengers on their way to the Canary Islands. Baxter stars as the washed-up, alcoholic doctor who takes a cruise to escape a scandal back in Blighty. He spends most of the film staring at his stateroom walls and flashing back
to past successes. A young female missionary, Johann, is in love with him from afar, but he's too interested in married woman Evans. Johann's brother, Norton, a religious zealot, finds himself involved in an affair with an older, bitter and cynical woman, but not much is done with this potentially
interesting story line. Baxter finally is given a chance to redeem himself when it appears that the island is infested with yellow fever. He sobers up enough to save the victims stricken with the dread disease. To wind up everything on a happy note, Evans gets a convenient divorce from her husband
and she and Baxter make a go of it.
