An ambitious, multigenerational saga of a Mexican-American family in East Los Angeles, with Jimmy Smits giving the performance of his career as an ex-con trying to reconstruct his domestic life. Directed by Gregory Nava (EL NORTE), the film's a bit too high-minded and sincere for its own
good, but it's a laudable attempt to apply Hollywood narrative style to a story seldom told in mainstream cinema.
