Writer Baker meets a prostitute, Moreau, and quickly becomes infatuated with her, fatally as it turns out. He abandons his fiancee, Lisi, and spends all his money on Moreau, but she taunts and leaves him. He marries Lisi but betrays her on their honeymoon when he sees Moreau again. Lisi,

finding out about the betrayal, kills herself. The smitten writer goes on seeing Moreau and at one point tries to kill her to erase her image from his mind. Finally she discards him entirely, and Baker, abandoned and broke, sinks down into poverty and loneliness. A grim drama springs from an

unimpressive story.
