Escape From New York: Review

Terrific fun. John Carpenter's futuristic thriller finds convict Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell) forced to rescue the president (Donald Pleasence) when his plane goes down over New York City. The U.S. is now a police state, and Manhattan has become one vast prison in which convicts are summarily dumped and left to fend for themselves. Also per Variety, Spider-man 4 has tapped James Vanderbilt (Zodiac) to pen the script, which unlike No. 3 will feature two baddies, max. Send your movie questions to FlickChick. Question: I'm a great fan of your column — I read it religiously every time it comes out. Here's my question: I've never been all that interested in musicals (I don't dislike them on principle, I just never felt very attracted to them), but recently I caught up with Jacques Demy's The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and it completely knocked my socks off. It absolutely blew me away, so much so that I'm ready to call it one of my favorite movies of all time. I was completely hooked on its unusual format: Every single line is sung and there are no big "numbers" like in regular musicals. It made the entire movie feel like one long, beautiful hymn. Is there any other movie that has used this same format? Per Variety, several studios are battling over dibs on a remake of John Carpenter's Escape from New York, to headline Gerard Butler (300) as one-eyed convict Snake Plissken.... Luke Wilson, Amanda Peet, Dennis Quaid, Justin Long and Chris Evans have joined the voice cast of Terra, a CG-animated pic about interplanetary conflict.... DreamWorks Animation plans to produce all of its films in 3-D starting in 2009, beginning with the summer release Monsters vs. Aliens. read more
