The Devil Strikes At NightMovie
Fascinating study of criminal justice in the crumbling Nazi empire of 1944. Eighty stranglings have left police and Gestapo mystified. Gestapo chief Messemer calls in an outsider, veteran Holm, to look into the case. He eventually discovers that the killings were done by one of the
Gestapo's own, brutish Adorf. To cover up this incorrect Aryan behavior, a scapegoat is found, tried, and executed, while Adorf is sent off to a particularly bad sector of the Russian front. The film marked the return of producer-director Siodmak to his native Germany after the war. The story,
based on a true case discovered in captured Gestapo files is well worth seeing if only for Adorf's hulking, terrifying killer.
