Static, portentous declaiming on a turn-of-the-century Texas plantation, based on a play by upper-middlebrow favorite Horton Foote. Soll Gautier (Robert Duvall), a drunken farmer who uses black convicts to work his land, rambles incoherently, pretty much without a pause, as a wide-eyed, possibly feebleminded 13-year-old (Lukas Haas) listens.
