In 1984, rock music sensation Prince surprised nearly everyone in the movie business with the overwhelming success of his debut film PURPLE RAIN. With UNDER THE CHERRY MOON Prince managed to obliterate those accolades. This follow-up feature takes all the narcissistic and misogynistic

ideas of PURPLE RAIN and whips them into an empty-headed froth. The result is foolish nonsense that serves as Prince's homage to himself. The story takes place along the coast of southern France. Christopher Tracy (Prince) is a pianist in an expensive restaurant, but his real occupation is

hustling wealthy women. He and his sidekick, Tricky (Jerome Benton), learn of a wealthy young heiress, Mary Sharon (Kristin Scott-Thomas), who is about to inherit $50 million. They crash her coming out party, where Christopher catches Mary's attention. But her father (Steven Berkoff) is not

particularly thrilled. UNDER THE CHERRY MOON amounts to a lot of preening, strutting, doe-eyed glances, and other pseudo-erotic moves by its star-director. As a director Prince doesn't show even a rudimentary sense of visual style, and his acting skills equal what his direction calls for. The

whole film plays exactly for what it is, one long essay in ego massaging.
