Casque D'Or Movie
One of the great films of French cinema, CASQUE D'OR initially was greeted with less than favorable reviews but met with renewed interest after then-critic Lindsay Anderson sang its praises.
Set at the turn of the century, the film concerns the romance betweem Signoret and Reggiani. After murdering a childhood friend, Reggiani surrenders to the authorities, though the killing has been pinned on someone else. Signoret asks a friend to help free her lover but is forced to compromise
herself in return. After she submits, the friend goes back on his word. However, when Reggiani is free, he hunts down Signoret's deceitful seducer and guns him down in front of witnesses, earning himself a trip to the guillotine.
Director Becker's fluid camerawork earned him praise from such influential French cineasts as Francois Truffaut and critic Jean Couturier. CASQUE D'OR is a most poetic film, evincing a cinematic purity Becker surely learned something about while working as Jean Renoir's assistant.
