Sex farces about randy young men are a dime a dozen, but while most are forgettable this one is memorable for all the wrong reasons. After living together for five years, Los Angeles-based David (Jerry O'Connell) and Sarah (Bridgette Wilson) agree to a trial separation. Annoyed by David's inability to commitment, Sarah accepts a job in New York, where she becomes the object of her boss's affection. The horny-but-shy David, meanwhile, can't wait to play the field and tries the personals as a way of getting back into the dating scene. David's buddy, Jonesy (Bill Bellamy), derides him for letting Sarah slip away, while his other pal, Mike (Ryan Reynolds), encourages one-night stands. Troubled by dreams about a perfect girl from his teen years, David mistakenly assumes this mystery woman is Julie (Erinn Bartlett), his friend Tyler's (Ron Livingston) fiancee. But at Tyler's wedding he realizes that Julie's younger sister, Katie (Scarlett Chorvat), is actually the soul mate from his past. David re-evaluates his relationship with Sarah, trying to decide whether to go back to her or chase a phantom beauty. A wayward taxi and cupid's arrow conspire to make the decision for him. Though Wilson and O'Connell are both charming, this god-awful comedy's misogyny and homophobia are distasteful, and can't be excused by the film's "anything for a laugh" strategy. --Robert Pardi
