Tough cop Butch Saunders (O'Brien) is transferred to the department's Missing Persons Bureau and put under the charge of Captain Webb (Stone). Butch views the bureau's duties as kid's work, not worthy of a real cop, and is consequently looked down upon by the hardened Webb. When Norma

Roberts (Davis) walks into the office one day, she tells Butch that her husband has been missing for a few weeks. Finding Norma attractive, Butch tells her that he will look into the matter personally and tries to make a date with her. When Webb notices Norma Roberts' name on the report, he

informs the dim Butch that Norma is wanted in Chicago for the murder of the man she claimed was her husband. Webb gives Butch 48 hours to haul Norma in and charge her with her husband's murder--a task which proves to Butch that the Missing Person's Bureau is not the "kindergarten" of the police

department. Amusing mystery film that is genuinely complex and intriguing, though it does take some slapstick turns. Davis fans will be disappointed as her headlining part is relatively small. One New York theater exploited the subject matter for all it was worth by placing a $10,000 reward

(complete with a framed check on display in the lobby) for information regarding the disappearance of a judge.
