This past Sunday, The Bourne Ultimatum took home three technical Oscars for editing, sound editing and sound mixing — every category in which it was nominated. In response, Universal has enlisted director Paul Greengrass and star Matt Damon in its effort to stage a fourth Bourne film.But wait, you ask? Didn't Jason Bourne (spoiler alert) recover his memory in Ultimatum, thus eliminating the series' central concept? Um, well, yeah. Has Blu-ray Finally Beat HD DVD for Good? | DVD News and Reviews | 1/9/2008
HBO has joined the parade to Blu-ray after Warner Bros, its distributor, announced on Friday that they were dropping HD-DVD in May 2008. The Warner Bros announcement could be the event that ends the war between high-definition formats. HD-DVD has the exclusive support of Universal and Paramount/DreamWorks, while Blu-ray has Fox/MGM, Warner Bros, Disney, Sony and Lionsgate. Warner Bros, which holds about 20 percent of the market, was a huge win for the Blu-ray group, and leaves Blu-ray with roughly 75 percent of the HD market. The Warner Bros decision has influenced New Line, along with HBO, to make the switch to Blu-ray, but BBC Home Video is bucking the trend and "will evaluate the marketplace before committing to one format" (according to the studio); the studio has four high-definition releases planned for 2008, available on both formats, and has sold more copies of Planet Earth on HD-DVD. Ratatouille topped last week's DVD sales chart, while I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry was the No. 1 rental pick. My sons checked out the Rat last week, but weren't wowed by it. Question: Much has been made about Paul Greengrass' handheld-camera work in The Bourne Ultimatum, and the fact that both Supremacy and Ultimatum have been hits makes me certain that filmmakers will keep doing it. But I can't be the only person who gets nauseous watching these films. The incessant movement is difficult to watch. Rarely does the camera stop long enough for the viewer to process a shot... even the quietest moments can't be still. Matt Damon is great and I'd like to say I enjoyed the movies, but when I have to go home and take something for headache and nausea, that can't be good.
