Posh production of a sophisticated Broadway play which ran for 50 weeks. The film, with Leslie Howard beautifully managing his difficult role, is centered about a British mansion which manages to somehow transport modern-day Howard back into the 18th century and into the body of a foppish

ancestor. Howard falls in love with a girl in a bygone age, saves her from assorted problems, and is then tragically torn back to the present where he meets her modern counterpart. It's a unique twist on Twain's A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, and the first time such a time-lapse film

was produced. Great style and Howard's haunting, lyrical presence lift this film far above the average. Howard's performance earned a Best Actor Academy Award nomination, but he lost to Charles Laughton for THE PRIVATE LIFE OF HENRY VIII. (Remade as THE HOUSE ON THE SQUARE and I'LL NEVER FORGET

YOU.)
