Halloween Slays Box-office Record, Yet Sequel Unlikely | Today's News: Our Take | 9/3/2007
Rob Zombie's reboot of John Carpenter's original Halloween bled $26.5 million from moviegoers' wallets in its first three days of release, setting a new record for a Labor Day weekend opening. (The previous record-holder was 2005's Transporter 2.) The fright flick also is on pace to top $30 mil for the full four-day weekend, eclipsing the $29.3 mil record held by 1999's The Sixth Sense. Even so, another "resurrection" of Michael Myers is unlikely. "I never say never," a Miramax Films exec tells Reuters, "but it would have to be something very, very different."Rounding out the top five were Superbad ($12.2 million), Balls of Fury (opening with $11.5 mil), The Bourne Ultimatum ($10.2 mil) and Rush Hour 3 ($8.6 mil). Tim Allen will star in The Six Wives of Henry Lefay, a comedy about a man whose wife and five exes fight over his will when he is believed dead. Andie McDowell, Kelli Garner, S. Epatha Merkerson and Paz Vega are in talks to play some of the titular ladies, while Elisha Cuthbert is on board as Allen's daughter. Hey, whatever precludes a Santa Clause 4.... Also per the Reporter, Jennifer Connelly, Kevin Connolly, Bradley Cooper, Justin Long and Ginnifer Goodwin are in talks to star in Drew Barrymore's He's Just Not That Into You, based on the best-seller.... Following a rousing reception at Comic-Con, the competitive Ping-Pong spoof Balls of Fury has been moved up to an Aug. 29 release. read more
