In this powerful, lightning-paced film, Tracy plays a one-armed stranger who uncovers a dangerous skeleton in a western hick town's closet, with harrowing results. Tracy is at his subdued, thoughtful best, while Ryan perfectly conveys the ignorance behind racial prejudice and Borgnine and Marvin are memorable heavies. Sturges's direction is superbly timed, and Kaufman's script was so memorable that many of its lines quickly passed into public use.
