The Adventures Of Pinocchio: Review
Children who have never seen the 1940 Disney version of Carlo Collodi's timeless tale are the target audience for this rambunctious blend of live action and animatronic puppetry crafted by Jim Henson's Creature Shop. Martin Landau indulges his passion for overacting as the kindly woodcarver Gepetto, who finally has a love interest (Genevieve Bujold), as he did in Collodi's novel. Kids should enjoy Pinocchio's mischievous antics and the cartoonish villains (Rob Schneider, Bebe Neuwirth and Udo Kier) he encounters along the way. But they may yearn for the souped-up effects newer movies have led them to take for granted, particularly when the creepy-looking, faux-pine puppet is coyly transformed into a real boy (
Home Improvement
's Jonathan Taylor Thomas). The musical numbers pale in comparison to the unforgettable Disney tunes, but the movie's simple approach to storytelling and its low-end special effects lend it a charm all its own.
