Southland Takes Advantage of Full Season with "More Refined" Storytelling

Benjamin McKenzie and John Cudlitz

It's odd to think that the cast of a show entering its third season has never shot more than six episodes at a time, but that's the case for TNT's Southland.

The gritty police drama debuted as a midseason replacement on NBC in 2009 and earned a 13-episode renewal for Season 2. Then, NBC canceled the show before it even premiered, allowing TNT to buy and air the six episodes NBC had in the can in early 2010.

So when TNT ordered a 10-episode third season, which begins Tuesday at 10/9c, the cast and crew were equally excited and cynical. "Well, the joke on set is... read more

VIDEO: First Trailer for Steven Spielberg's Falling Skies

Noah Wylie

In TNT's alien-invasion drama Falling Skies, due next summer, Noah Wyle stars as the de facto resistance leader against aliens who invaded Earth. The producers insist the drama will focus on what the aliens left behind rather than the invasion itself, although you wouldn't get that from the first trailer.

The series from Steven Spielberg seems to draw not only from his own War of the Worlds remake — an adaptation of the H.G. Wells novel — but from many sci-fi facets, including Battlestar Galactica (with cylon-looking drones) and V (with the idea of joining a resistance).

Keck's Exclusives: Dallas Without J.R.? "News to me," Says Stunned Larry Hagman

Larry Hagman

That report that came out Thursday — that TNT had failed to come to financial terms with Larry Hagman to join the cast of its Dallas reboot and was proceeding with a revised script that featured the Ewings without their patriarch? Don't take that to the bank just yet, darlins'.

I just got off the phone with Larry who said all this comes as news to him. I read him the report, which left the 79-year-old TV legend stunned and nearly speechless. "I hadn't heard about that, huh!" said Larry. "That's really interesting. We were talking about money, but I didn't know it was going to come to a crashing halt like that. You got a scoop for whatever that's worth: Larry Hagman doesn't know what's going on!"

What this sounds like to me is a scare tactic — not unlike what Lorimar pulled back in the summer of 1980 after J.R. Ewing's infamous shooting when the production company threatened to replace Larry with actor Robert Culp if he didn't return from Europe, where the savvy businessman had escaped while his team negotiated a new contract... read more

The Closer Creator James Duff Previews "Old Money"

Kyra Sedgwick

Welcome back.

For the next five Monday nights, we will wind our way through both the holidays and the end of our sixth season. In between wrapping gifts, holiday feasts and gatherings with family and friends, we hope you have a little extra time to spend with Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson as she gets to the bottom of several new mysteries. As always, our "back five" episodes offer us the chance to tell the kind of stories we would not attempt during our regular summer run, emphasizing our characters almost as much as the murders they are called upon to solve.

It's no secret that Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson, like most homicide detectives, doesn't care too much about drugs... read more

Men of a Certain Age Preview: Midlife Goes On with New Challenges

Ray Romano

Men of a Certain Age turns 2 — the so-called "terrible" stage in life — on Monday. But for the TNT drama, things remain as bittersweet as ever for its leading men as they continue to tackle and tiptoe around middle age.

"It's kind of that never-ending arc that everyone has in life, where you're still trying to get out from under," Ray Romano tells TVGuide.com. "They have a destination they want to get to, but they never ...
