Soaps

Dear Soaps, I just read that...

Dear Soaps,

I just read that the character Matt Clark is returning to Y&R. Wasn't Nick jailed for killing Matt? I remember that Amy shot Matt, and I could have sworn that he died. Please refresh my memory.
— Crisanne

Dear Crisanne,
Nick was wrongly imprisoned for Matt's attempted murder; when Matt saw that the truth was about to be revealed — he raped Amy — he packed his bags and hightailed it out of Genoa City. Third Watch hunk Eddie Cibrian played Matt. (MJM)

Dear Soaps, Good instincts regarding...

Dear Soaps,

Good instincts regarding Aaron's whereabouts in last week's column, but unfortunately As the World Turns's writers under former executive producer Felicia Minei Behr didn't share them. When Holden left Oakdale without his memory, he took Aaron when he went to the memory-loss clinic (which I believe was near Washington, DC, where Iva lives). When he rode back into town on his motorcycle a few years later, he said that Aaron was living with Julie and Caleb in Seattle.

Boy, was there talk on the ATWT message boards! No one believed that Caleb would willingly raise Holden and Julie's son since their affair was such a big problem for him for so long. If Holden was going to abandon his son after forcing Iva to give him back, the least he could have done was admit he made a mistake and let the kid live with Iva. Unfortunately, no writer since Doug Marland has ever given Holden much credit for intelligence. And with Abigail in the read more

Dear Soaps,

On The Young and the Restless, how did Jill's father, William Foster, die?
— Lindsey

Dear Lindsey,
In 1976, Bill Foster, battling lung cancer and emphysema, was put on a respirator. He begged his wife, Liz, to end his suffering — and she did. Bill and Liz's son Snapper was suspected of pulling the plug, but a lack of evidence led to the case's dismissal (Michael J. Maloney)

Dear Soaps, Who was behind the...

Dear Soaps,

Who was behind the hiring of Hogan Sheffer as ATWT's new head writer? Are you back on good terms with MADD and Graham? Why didn't you update the Soaps News column when the news about Sheffer taking over ATWT was released?
— SEW

Dear SEW,
I've been told from various sources that Bill Graham "discovered" Sheffer, which, hopefully, means Sheffer won't get too much interference from P&G. MADD and I are pals again ("Bygones!" she wrote in her note to me); I seriously doubt Graham knows who I am... although, if memory serves, he turned down my request to interview him a few years back. Maybe he does know who I am. I didn't feel the need to update Soaps News because — in my mind, at least — it was only a matter of time before Sheffer ascended to the head writer position. I mean, P&G had warned me earlier in the week not to intimate anything about his future a read more

Dear Soaps,
Dear Reiner,
On Y&R, how did Jill's father, William Foster, die?
— Lindsey

Dear Lindsey,
In 1976, Bill Foster, battling lung cancer and emphysema, was put on a life-support respirator. He begged wife Liz to end his suffering, and she did. Bill and Liz's son Snapper was suspected of pulling the plug, but the case was dropped due to lack of evidence. (MJM)

Dear Soaps, Dear Reiner, Last...

Dear Soaps,
Dear Reiner, Last week you answered a question about the whereabouts of Holden's brother, and you said Caleb was living with Julie and stepkids Pete and Jenny in Seattle. Doesn't Julie and Holden's son, Aaron, live with Caleb and Julie? If not, what happened to Aaron?
— AB

Dear AB,
Oh, no! I was positive that Aaron was living with Iva, Jason and MJ, but now that you mention it... maybe he is living in Seattle. Paging [ATWT writers' assistant] Jared Levine!

Dear Soaps,
Dear Reiner,
Did GH's Monica really have an affair with Ned?
— LadyXTC88

Dear LadyXTC88,
Yes, she really did. In 1988, Monica went to a spa and met Tracy's son Ned (then played by Kurt McKinney) — unaware he was her nephew by marriage (he was using the name Ward at the time) — and the two had a brief affair. The tryst is rarely mentioned these days, but was brought up at Monica's trial when Pierce Dorman sued her for sexual harassment. (MJM)

Dear Soaps,
Dear Reiner,
Did the actor who plays Luke Spencer on General Hospital also play Bill Eckert?
— TJay

Dear TJay,
Yes! Good ol' Anthony Geary (Luke) played Bill, a Spencer cousin, from 1991 to '93. Raise your hand if you remember Mama Angela Eckert slaving away in the kitchen, or Bill's famous urinal scene!

Dear Soaps, Dear Reiner, I remember...

Dear Soaps,
Dear Reiner,
I remember that Nina had a baby that was stolen from her when she first joined The Young and the Restless; are TPTB ever going to reunite Nina with her child? That would be interesting.
— Daiana

Dear Daiana,
Years ago Nina confessed to Ryan that the loss of her first baby still haunts her, so it's not a totally forgotten topic. However, Y&R is aging Phillip (Nina's other son) in natural time, so it doesn't appear as if the show's in any rush to have Tricia Cast (Nina) play mother to a grown teen hunk. Given that head writer Kay Alden is constantly mining the show's past, it's probably inevitable that this long-lost "baby" will be addressed in detail at some point. Having inherited Phillip Chancellor III's estate, Nina sure has the financial resources to locate her child if she so desires. (Michael J. Maloney)
