Show minus stars equals different show: It's one of the mantras of Jump the Shark, and it's true — unless, maybe, the show is The Tonight Show.
The Tonight Show is an institution that has had only four full-time hosts in more than half a century. Jack Paar, Steve Allen, Johnny Carson and Jay Leno all made their own imprints on the show, but in the way a minister does a church. Whether or not congregants like his or her personality or jokes, the basic religion stays the same.
How Wednesday's fresh fare fared:
CBS' George Strait concert special was the night's most watched program, averaging 10.6 million total viewers over its two-hour run. The Season 2 premiere of ABC's Wipeout, however, topped the 8 o'clock demos — So You Think You Can Dance included. With an audience of 8.64 million, Wipeout bested its Season 1 average and gave ABC its best numbers in the Wednesdays-at-8 slot since November 2007.
Fox's Dance tangoed with 8.58 mil in its two-hour Wednesday premiere.
The premiere of ABC's The Goode Family wiped away 50 percent of Wipeout's audience, scoring just 3.93 mil. Lead-out Surviving Suburbia in turn hit a series-low 2.83 mil. Keep in mind, the fate of Bob Saget's new show will be decided by these "summer" numbers.
ABC's soon-to-be unplugged The Unusuals hit an all-time low of 3.9 mil, lagging far behind Criminal Minds and Law & Order repeats.

Al Roker has set folks atwitter by taking pictures from jury duty and posting them on his Twitter page.
The Today show weather man posted this picture from the jury assembly room of a New York courthouse Thursday morning. The photo shows prospective jurors, which is not allowed, a court official told TMZ.
Roker responded via Twitter that a court official told him pictures were only prohibited in the courtroom, and thus the photos he snapped in the assembly room and jury lounge were OK.
"So everyone is clear, I am NOT taking pictures in the courtroom," Roker wrote. "I am in the jury lounge. So folks need to lighten up.
"I'm not breaking laws...just trying to share the experience of jury duty," he continued. "One that I think is important and everyone should take part in."
