Police fatally shot an armed man who had taken hostages at Discovery Communications headquarters, ending a nerve-rattling standoff that held much of Silver Spring, Md., paralyzed Wednesday afternoon.
Montgomery County Police Chief J. Thomas Manger told reporters that a device went off and released smoke during the confrontation, but that three hostages were safe. He said the man had two backpacks and two boxes and that police were trying to determine early Tuesday evening if they contained explosive devices.

Michael Douglas says he has Stage IV throat cancer, but remained optimistic about a full recovery.
"The percentages are very good. I would hate to say, but right now, it looks like it should be 80 percent, and with certain hospitals and everything, it does improve," Douglas said on The Late Show with David Letterman Tuesday.
