Retired at 35 Star George Segal: Will Work for Cigars, Banjo

Retired at 35

When it came time to lure George Segal back to primetime television for TV Land's new sitcom Retired at 35, he had two mandates: his character would have to smoke cigars and play the banjo.

"I said [it was that] or no dice," the industry veteran, 76, joked Wednesday at the Television Critics Assn.'s winter preview session.

Added series creator and executive producer Chris Case: "There was no banjo in the original pilot script until George came on board. It's so collaborative, this medium. You go, you know what George Segal plays the banjo. Let's do that."

Court Nixes NYPD Blue Nudity Fine

NYPD Blue

A federal appeals court has ruled that the Federal Communications Commission cannot fine ABC and selected affiliates $1.2 million for airing a 2003 episode of NYPD Blue that showed actress Charlotte Ross' nude buttocks, citing the FCC's unconstitutionally vague rules, The Associated Press reports.

The 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals in New York said Tuesday that the decision was in line with its previous ruling that TV stations can no longer be fined for fleeting, unscripted profanities uttered during live broadcasts. In July, the appeals court ruled that the FCC's indecency policy violated First Amendment rights and was unconstitutionally vague.

In its Tuesday ruling, the three-judge panel wrote that there was "no significant distinction" between its decision in the expletives case and the NYPD Blue case.

Court rules FCC indecency policy "unconstitutionally vague"

"According to the FCC, 'nudity itself is not per se indecent,'" the judges wrote. "The FCC, therefore, decides in which ...

Watercooler: OMG! V is No Longer MIA!

V

Anna and her amphibious minions returned on V last night and wow, did those scaly freaks launch Season 2 in fittingly cold-blooded fashion. There were crazy acid-rain nightmares. A hybrid baby that looked like a floating Yoda. A V skeleton. Oh, and there was a death that has got to beat The Bachelor's "bat wing" body-waxing conversation for grossest moment of the week. In other words, while it wasn't exactly bliss, the season premiere was pretty great.

More so, it was a lot of what we spent last year waiting for and never got... read more
