Dear Soaps, Do you know of any...

Dear Soaps,
Do you know of any other journalist with no formal schooling or training who is allowed to run a whole newsroom (i.e., Guiding Light's Reva Shayne)? If I'm not mistaken, even Victoria Newman on The Young and the Restless had to take a few classes before running the family business. -- Sj40plus

Dear Sj40plus,
Well, Y&R's Vicki doesn't run the entire family business, and I actually don't recall her ever taking any classes. In Reva's case, at least we know that she had worked as a photographer and collaborated with journalist Fletcher Reade on a series of articles back in the mid-'80s. She must have learned something about journalism through those experiences. As I recall, One Life to Live's Todd and both Kim and Katie on As the World Turns jumped into, respectively, the print and broadcast journalism games without much training. Personally, I'm far more concerned about those overnight doctors who read more

Dear Soaps, General Hospital's...

Dear Soaps,
General Hospital's Sonny is a mobster, correct? Well I would like to know what he does that is illegal. He won't deal with drugs, weapons or laundering money. So what makes him such a criminal? I have been trying to figure this out and have asked everybody who watches General Hospital and nobody seems to know. Thank you, and I hope to get a response. -- Jazelle

Dear Jazelle,
This is an excellent question, and I've often wondered myself just what Sonny does that's so illegal. Does his coffee have more than caffeine in it? Is yelling at Mike against the law? Could Sonny be arrested for those awful things that he used to say to Carly? I think the reason viewers never see Sonny do anything illegal is because the audience might lose sympathy for the character. It's implied that he's dangerous, and everyone acts as if he's done bad things (although, they tend to overlook them as well), but nobody really knows what they are. Mayb read more

Dear Soaps, How did Todd on One...

Dear Soaps,
How did Todd on One Life to Live get that hideous scar on his face? Did Nora give it to him? -- Souffle411

Dear Souffle411,
The scar on Todd's face is his scarlet letter. No, Nora didn't give him the scar, though she could have; Todd has put this woman in more precarious positions than I care to remember. The scar is courtesy of Luna Moody. After Todd and his pals gang-raped Marty Saybrooke but were released due to a mistrial (Nora was his lawyer), Todd wanted to make Marty pay. After Marty had spoken of her attack on Luna's radio show, Todd cornered her in an alley and threatened to rape her again. Luna, a rape survivor herself, charged into the alley with a lead pipe. To protect Marty and herself, she took a swing, and voila! -- Todd's badge of dishonor. (Delaina Dixon)

Dear Soaps, I thought that All...

Dear Soaps,
I thought that All My Children's Maria would have turned up, since they never found a body after the plane crash that "killed" her. Is she coming back soon? I thought Adam and Arlene never made love. Did they? Thanks a bunch. -- Tammy

Dear Tammy,
Now that Melissa Reeves (Jennifer, Days of Our Lives) has returned to soaps, the mantle of "When is she coming back?" can be officially transferred to Eva LaRue. Although the actress has no plans to return to All My Children at this time, one can predict that someday she'll likely reprise her fan-favorite role. Currently, the performer is testing the waters outside of Pine Valley. It may be a year or two more (hey, it took Melissa five years to come back), but it's safe to say that LaRue someday will be lured back to soaps. According to story recap, Arlene appeared to have seduced Adam in the early summer. Arlene may have lost her baby, but, thanks to Vanessa, read more

Dear Soaps, Did the person who...

Dear Soaps,
Did the person who played Mason on Santa Barbara (Lane Davies, I believe) appear in the season premiere of The Practice as the person testifying against Bobby Donnell's (Dylan McDermott) client? I have $1000 betting that it wasn't him. -- Katherine

Dear Katherine,
You may want to discuss a payment plan with your friend. Davies, who also appeared on DAYS, did indeed play key witness Kyle Barrett on the season premiere of The Practice. His character committed perjury on the stand, which led to the conviction of Bobby's friend. Look for Davies's character to recur in two more episodes of The Practice on Oct. 15 and Oct. 29. (DD)

Dear Soaps, I know Josh Taylor...

Dear Soaps,
I know Josh Taylor was on Days of Our Lives many years ago, but he didn't play Roman Brady. What was the name of his character? -- Susan

Dear Susan,
From 1977-'87, Taylor played Chris Kositchek, a blue-collar and likeable bachelor in Salem who wore many hats. Over the years, he ran a health club (The Body Connection) and an eatery called Shenanigans. Chris was everyone's pal. His romantic interests included Mary Anderson, Amanda Peters, Leslie James, Savannah Wilder, and, ironically, his current TV sister, Kayla Brady. Chris befriended troubled teen Pete Jannings and took him under his wing after Chris discovered that his brother, Jake, was the Salem Strangler. At one point, a lawyer was needed for a storyline (involving Kimberly, as I recall) and so the writers established that Chris had gone to law school so he was therefore a lawyer! This prompted the offbeat character Calliope to apparently ad-lib in one scene, "Chris read more

Dear Soaps, Is the actress who...

Dear Soaps,
Is the actress who portrayed Hal Munson's long-lost daughter Nikki on As The World Turns the same actress who played Meggie Cleary as a child in the 1983 television miniseries, The Thorn Birds, starring Richard Chamberlain and Rachel Ward? She looks so much like her! -- Susan B

Dear Susan B,
Jordana Brewster, who played Hal Munson's daughter Nikki from 1995-98, did not play a young Meggie Cleary in The Thorn Birds. Sydney Penny (Ex-Julia, AMC) did the honors. But here's an interesting connection: Brewster briefly stepped in as Anita Santos, Julia's sister, on All My Children before joining the ATWT cast. Obviously, AMC execs also saw the actresses' resemblance. (DD)

Dear Soaps, Please riddle me this:...

Dear Soaps,
Please riddle me this: Years ago, when Bianca was just a little girl and found out about Erica and Uncle Jackson's affair, she set her Barbie and Ken dolls (named Erica and Jackson) on fire, and the house caught on fire. What happened next? Did Jackson save her? Did anybody get hurt? I just can't remember. Was this Bianca's first foray into psychosis? -- Helene

Dear Helene,
Let's just say life has been a little maddening for Bianca from day one. Remember when her father, the late Travis Montgomery, hatched his own kidnapping, hoping to collect insurance money, to thwart a hostile corporate takeover by Adam Chandler? When the plan failed, the kidnapper snatched baby Bianca instead! Then Bianca suffered from Reye's syndrome. When Bianca caught her mother kissing Uncle Jackson, her father's brother, she did set her "Jack" doll on fire. The blaze went awry, and Erica tried to save her little girl, but she was overcome by smoke. Travis saved read more

Dear Soaps, What happened to Kimberly's...

Dear Soaps,
What happened to Kimberly's dad, Adam Alexander, on The Bold and the Beautiful? -- Anonymous

Dear Anonymous,
Mobsters who wanted revenge against Adam saw he had resurfaced after spying his photo in a local newspaper. The thugs tried to kill him, wounding Sally in the process. Adam felt the best thing to do was to leave town, to protect his loved ones from future attacks. His plan appears to have worked, as Sally hasn't been shot in months. I caught up with Michael Swan (who played Adam) recently. He's involved in a web site and told me he'd definitely be open to reprising the part. (MJM)

Dear Soaps, How many times has...

Dear Soaps,
How many times has James Stenbeck "died" and returned from the dead on As the World Turns? Exactly how did he "die" and return each time? -- Carleigh

Dear Carleigh,
ATWT's James was presumed dead four times. First, he fell out of a plane (saved by a parachute), then he was shot and burned in a cabin (it was actually his henchman Nick, who died; James made sure Nick had the same dental work as he did, hence the misidentification of the body). Next, a helicopter crash claimed James's life (yeah, right). Finally, Paul shot James as he was trying to murder Emily. Unknown to all, James had paid off the coroner to say that he had died. Stenbeck could easily give Days of Our Lives's Stefano a run for his money when it comes to being a phoenix, the mythical bird that rises from the ashes. (MJM)
