Based on the best-selling book, Gone Girl stars Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike and grossed $38 million, according to Box Office Mojo. Annabelle followed close behind with $37.2 million.
Denzel Washington's new action flick The Equalizer opened in first place this weekend, taking in $35 million at the box office, according to Box Office Mojo. That's the fourth-highest September debut for a film ever.
The Maze Runner won the box office race this weekend, according to Box Office Mojo. The flick, starring Teen Wolf's Dylan O'Brien, raked in $32.5 million in its opening weekend.
Coming in the No. 2 spot was another new film, A Walk Among the Tombstones. The Liam Neeson-led movie earned $13.1 million. The ensemble piece This is Where I Leave You was right behind with $11.8 million.

No Good Deed, the new thriller starring Idris Elba and Taraji P. Henson, bumped Guardians of the Galaxy out of the top spot at the box office this weekend, opening at No. 1 with $24.5 million, Box Office Mojo reports.
