Julian killed Valerie and Stefan's unborn child. Unforgiveable! Julian killed an entire coastline of people on Christmas. Unforgiveable! Julian challenged Enzo to a duel when his life was linked to Lily's. Unforgiveable! The list really goes on and on...

It's hard to judge people for wanting to eradicate vampires. It is very easy to judge people when they act like douchebags though. And that's exactly what Wes did. From when he embarrassed Caroline and Elena in their first class to when he forcibly turned Jesse into a vampire to when he experimented on Damon with the Ripper serum, Wes was a Grade-A D.B.

It's not April's fault her father Pastor Young was the worst. It's also not her fault that almost every time April learned something about the supernatural world, she was compelled to forget, therefore damning viewers to repeatedly watch her freak out about learning vampires are real over and over again. And it really isn't even her fault that she trusted Rebekeh and helped set a trap for the Mystic Falls Gang, since April hadn't exactly been treated great by them. That being said, April didn't bring enough to the table to balance out all the obnoxious situations her presence inspired. Sorry, girl! At least you'll always have Miss Mystic Falls.

Rayna was a born and raised vampire hunter, but that doesn't excuse her willingness to kill anyone - no matter the species - who got in her way. And secretly transferring the huntress title to Bonnie, that was just low, man!

Poor Aaron. No wonder he believed everyone he knew wound up dead - because it was true! Despite all this, Aaron helped rescue Elena and turned against Wes, the only family he had left. But while we give props to Aaron for being a good guy, he was also a pretty boring guy.

The only real problem with Luke (besides his questionable choice in hairstyles) was that he simply wasn't as well integrated into the narrative as his twin sister Liv. However, that didn't stop him from attempting to merge with his older brother Kai in order to kill him. Although Luke died in the process, his ability to feel empathy was passed on to Kai, so his death wasn't for nothing.

Love makes people do dumb things (like create an immortality spell). Being dumped also makes people do dumb things (like create a supernatural purgatory to punish your ex for all eternity). But while these reasons might be slightly understandable, they still add up to Qetsiyah doing some seriously huge - and world-changing - dumb things for incredibly self-involved reasons.

Nadia's dedication to her mother Katherine, even before they ever met, was kind of sweet. But it was super rude of her to do the spell that made Katherine a Passenger in Elena's body. That's why we weren't exactly heartbroken when Tyler bit her.

Finn had a cult-like devotion to his mother, which went as far as him being will to sacrifice himself to kill his siblings to please her. He did eventually have a change of heart after reuniting with his girlfriend Sage, but he was killed by Matt before he could act on it. (And yes, he was resurrected on The Originals, but let's keep this strictly TVD, OK?)

We respect Esther for her willingness to own up to her mistakes (creating the original vampires), but she took this mission too far - particularly when it came to turning Alaric into an enhanced Original.

Carol wasn't the most lovable character, but she did what she could to protect her son Tyler and no one deserves to die the way she did.We never really got to know Beau as well as the other Heretics, largely due to the fact that he was mute. However, he did appear to have a decent heart, swearing allegiance to Valerie after he learned the truth about what Julian did and helping to stop the twins from killing Caroline while they were being born.

Penny seemed like a sweet girl and she definitely made Matt happy. However, we can barely remember anything else about her, so she clearly didn't make too much of an impression.

Much like Angel, Mikael was a vampire who hunts vampires. But unlike Angel, Mikael wasn't a good guy. First, he turned his children into vampires. Then, he made it his life mission to kill his children. Whatever happened to blood is thicker than water?!

Silas is -- technically - the most important Vampire Diaries character because without him, none of the events we've witnessed ever would have occurred. So while we're forever indebted to Silas for setting off the tragic chain of events that have made for great, dramatic television, he was a major snoozefest tbh, and failed to inspire empathy in the same way other Big Bads in this show have done.

Clueless and petty. That pretty much sums Lily up. Lily just wanted everyone to get along, but when things didn't go her way, she had no problem hurting people as retribution. She eventually tried to redeem herself by working with her sons against Julian, but it was too little, too late.

Meredith could more than handle herself, as she proved time and time again. It's just a shame the Mystic Falls Gang wrongly suspected her of murder for such a huge portion of Meredith's time on the show. She could have been a great full-time addition to the team.

First off, the fact that Damon slept with Elena's mom is foul. But then again, so if faking your death so you could turn into a vampire and leave your husband widowed and in mourning. Isobel did do a fair job redeeming herself once she reappeared in Mystic Falls, but that doesn't wipe out the years of selfishness.

Kol was the (somewhat) lovable misfit of the Mikaelson family. Not nearly as smart of intimidating as his brothers and sisters, Kol was unpredictable and would do anything to save his own skin. Whether he was a witch, a vampire or a ghost, those things never changed about Kol. So at least he was consistent?

It's unfortunate that Valerie had to come between one of the show's most beloved couples, because it did unfairly color her reception. Her relationship with Stefan aside, Valerie's tragic past made her quite the sympathetic character and she did go to great lengths to help keep Caroline and Ric's twins safe. However, if you mess with Steroline, you mess with all of us.

First introduced in Season 5 as a student at Whitmore College, Liv was the more memorable Parker twin (even if she was also the weaker of the two). Still, she was strong when it counted, like when she brought several people back from the crumbling Other Side and again when she sacrificed herself to Tyler so he could reactivate his werewolf gene and heal from the wounds he sustained at the hands of Liv's older brother, the villainous Kai.

Emily was loyal and would do whatever it takes to help the people she cared about. She even went so far as to resurrect Jeremy simply because Bonnie loved him. We just wish we could have gotten to know her more outside her magical abilities.

John was a bit of a cad, and if he had been played by anyone but David Anders we might have hated him. That being said, we can't help but love John for the way he sacrificed himself to save Elena.

The Vampire Diaries always excelled when it came to familial issues, and Pearl was one of the earliest evidence of that. Pearl never wanted revenge on anyone. She merely wanted her life back after John Gilbert betrayed her. And watching her emotional reunion with Anna brought serious tears to our eyes.

The show's first (and only) gay couple, Nora and Mary Louise's relationship provided a new perspective on what it means to live for centuries. Despite the fact that they could both be fairly cruel, we couldn't help but root for Nora and Mary Louise to make it work now that they could finally live their true lives out in the open. It's just a shame they decided to sacrifice themselves before they had a chance.

Hayley was brave and never afraid to fight for what she wants. Unfortunately, what she wanted in the beginning was just to get her real family back - even more than protecting Tyler or the lives of her hybrid friends. While motherhood would inspire Hayley to become a much better person on The Originals, she never achieved such heights on TVD.

Mason Lockwood, we hardly knew 'ye. And yet we love you so friggin' much. Sure, he worked for Katherine, which was bad news, but he had such a charm about him that we really didn't care. That's why when Damon ripped out Mason's heart, he ripped out ours as well.

After a string of relationships that didn't end well (read: the women kept dying), Alaric finally found happiness with Jo, an excellent doctor at the university's hospital. She was understanding and compassionate, and she was already in-the-know regarding the supernatural forces surrounding them on account she was a witch. Unfortunately, Jo was also the twin of the malicious Kai, which meant she was probably always doomed to die since, in order for Kai to become the leader of the Gemini coven, he had to merge with his twin. That's not exactly what happened, but do we really need to relive that sad horrible nightmare? No, no we do not.

We wish we had someone as kind and patient as Grams to turn to whenever things got rough. We also wish we had someone half as powerful too, because Grams will eff you up if you try and go after her own. She has the kind of strength and conviction that can't be taught, but we're proud to see how those traits have lived on in her granddaughter Bonnie.

The moment Vicki died was the moment we realized TVD wasn't messing around. Even though Vicki was a bit of a bad girl, she didn't deserve anything that happened to her. She was blunt and funny, and it really wasn't her fault that she struggled so much to control her vampire urges. Really, we blame Damon for that.

All Anna ever wanted was to get her mother back, which is why it's so easy to overlook everything she did to achieve that. And her relationship with Jeremy - although it began under questionable circumstances - was too sweet.

For someone who appeared in less than ten episodes, Lexi made quite the impression. She was one of the first vampires on this show who knew how to have fun and not let her blood-drinking get in the way of enjoying her life to the fullest. When Stefan told Caroline in Season 2 that she reminded him of Lexi, that's about the highest compliment one could get.

Poor sweet, innocent Jenna. She stepped up and took on raising two young children, despite being so young herself. She had terrible luck with love and was a bit naïve, but she was a lot of fun and incredibly giving. That's why it didn't surprise us when Esther revealed Jenna's heart was still pure when she was staked. At least she found some peace in the afterlife.

Jeremy had his issues -- be it drugs, depression, seeing ghosts or that terrible Hunters Curse - but each time he died (and he died a lot) our hearts broke. Watching Jeremy struggle to find his place in a world that grew more confusing by the day was an incredibly journey, and even if we didn't necessarily agree with all his choices, we loved watching him make them.

Poor Matty Blue Eyes. The only member of the Mystic Falls Gang to never have a single supernatural ability, Matt was always the odd man out -- and he knew it. To add insult to injury, Matt suffered unbearable losses over the course of the series, but that never stopped him putting his life on the line and doing whatever he could to fight for what he believes is right.

Elijah is one of the most powerful vampires on the planet, but you'd never know it from how he acts. Elijah's nonchalance is a thing of true beauty. Whether he's ripping someone's heart out or sipping on some wine, Elijah is always calm, cool and collected. And we love knowing that behind his stoic façade and impeccable manners, Elijah is an utter softy at heart.

How do we begin to describe Kai Parker? As the charismatic villain of Season 6, Kai was damn near flawless. His hair was probably not insured for any money, but it should have been. He didn't do car commercials in Japan, but he did get banished to a prison world for killing/attempting to kill his siblings to become the leader of the Gemini coven. His favorite movie was definitely the one in which he antagonized Bonnie and killed his remaining siblings. Everyone with working eyeballs certainly found him attractive, and honestly, if he ever punched us in the face, we'd definitely think it was awesome. It was a shame that he had to die after what he did to Elena, though, because he was by far one of the most exciting villains the series ever had.

All Rebekah ever wanted was to have fun, find love and live a normal life. It's not her fault people got in the way of that! Did she get jealous and petty sometimes? Yes. Did this often lead to her hurting and/or killing people? Sure. But she did it all with such pizzazz, humor and glamour that we always forgave her. In short, Rebekah was fabulous through and through, and we won't hear a bad word against her.

She was generous. She was pragmatic. She was smart. She was strong. Sheriff Forbes was everything you could want in a mother and in a friend. She cared deeply about the safety of the people of Mystic Falls, but she also learned to keep an open mind when it came to supernatural creatures after learning Caroline was a vampire. Soon, Sheriff Forbes became a champion for anyone with a good heart, no matter if they were human or not.

Alaric is a total catch! He's insanely smart, can protect you from unwanted vampire attention, has morals out the wazoo and is a hopelessly devoted father. It's just a shame it appears as though he's destined to be forever alone. This man has had more doomed love interests than we care to count. But fortunately, he still has his BFF Damon by his side.

When Enzo was first introduced as a villain in Season 5 we never would have guessed how hard we'd fall for him eventually. No matter how tough things got, Enzo was always a survivor - often using his sharp sense of humor to distract from the troubles at hand. And though his relationship with Bonnie was short-lived, it was one of the most beautiful and powerful loves we've seen on this show.

Tyler was kind of a tool when we first met him. Don't get us wrong. We love Tyler. But you have to admit, he started out as a bit of a jerk. But once Tyler became a werewolf, he proved to have an incredibly strong moral conviction. It's that strength that allowed Tyler to break his sire bond to Klaus and to secretly work to free the other hybrids. And it was also that strength that allowed him to face his death at Damon's hand without fear.

How many times has Bonnie stepped up and sacrificed herself and her happiness to help her friends? Too many to count. Whether she had magic, whether she didn't, whether she was a ghost or trapped in the '90s, Bonnie never failed to be a hero. But as compassionate as Bonnie is, she can also give out some serious tough love (which many of her friends often need to hear). We totally understand why she's one of the few people whom Damon Salvatore considers a good friend.

Katherine's early life was rough. Disowned by her family for having a child out of wedlock, set up to be sacrificed so Klaus can break a curse, forced to go on the run for over 500 years - these are not exactly easy things to deal with. That's why it's no surprise Katherine adopted a survival of the fittest attitude, protecting herself above all else. And because we can understand why Katherine was the way she was, it made it much easier to love her for it. She's completely and utterly evil, yes, but you've got to respect her for her never-ending dedication to protecting her own neck. Plus, she did it with such flair!

Elena is the beating heart of this series. Even since she left in Season 6, her presence has continued to hang over each of the surviving characters, acting as a moral lighthouse to help guide them to making the right choices. Because that's what Elena does: she helps people become the best versions of themselves.

When Klaus showed up in Mystic Falls, he was the first villain who felt truly terrifying. He was more powerful than anyone the gang had faced, and it made the show exciting in a way it hadn't been before. It didn't hurt that Klaus was also devastatingly handsome and ridiculously charming. And once Klaus starting falling in love with Caroline and showing his sweeter side, we felt better about our own crush on him too. Because at the end of the day, Klaus wasn't pure evil. He just wanted to be able to protect himself after suffering years of abuse at the hands of Mikael. Plus, he could paint us like one his French girls (next to a horse, of course).

Fans of Angel probably are also probably big stans for Stefan Salvatore. Most of the time, he's the sweetest, most reliable guy around. But when pushed to his dark side, Stefan quickly becomes the evilest dude on the block. And to be honest, sometimes we prefer him that way! Stefan is so often weighed down by his strong morals that he never gets to have any fun. Ripper Stefan, on the other hand, knows how to let lose (often at the expense of human life, but still). Stefan always keeps us on our toes, giving us two characters for the price of one: the stable, compassionate love interest and the charismatic, quippy antagonist at the same time. What more could we want?

There's just something about a bad boy that we can't resist. Damon has done things that should technically be unforgivable (RIP Tyler), and yet we can't help but root for him. Maybe it's because we know that Damon probably hates himself more for these actions than anyone else could possibly hate him, and that he truly wants to be better, but has a hard time figuring out how. Or maybe it's just because he always has the perfect one-liner on deck and looks good with his shirt off. Whatever the reason, Damon forever.

Even when Caroline was a self-involved, superficial drama queen, she was still one of the show's most consistently entertaining characters. And once she turned into a vampire, Caroline matured in ways we never would have predicted - all without losing her signature charm and humor. When it was announced Nina Dobrev was leaving Vampire Diaries, many fans didn't know how the show would continue without her when the answer was right in front of us: Caroline Forbes. She soon became the glue that held this show together and brought light into even the darkest situations.
