A second-generation Scientologist, the King of Queens star defected in July 2013 after reportedly falling out of favor with the church for questioning the leadership of highest-ranking member David Miscavige and challenging the church's policy to isolate its members from their families. "I believe that people should value family, and value friendships, and hold those things sacrosanct," Remini said. "It doesn't matter, it could be anything. I thought about the family being broken up for some other cause, and I'm not about to shut up."

The Oscar-winning screenwriter and director left the church in 2009. "I was in a cult for 34 years," Haggis told The New Yorker. "Everyone else could see it. I don't know why I couldn't." The Crash director wrote an open letter in praise of Leah Remini's "brave" decision to quit, which incurred the wrath of the church. "Mr. Haggis is a status-obsessed screenwriter who in the words of The Hollywood Reporter has been in 'the wilderness' professionally for three years," the church said in response. "His statement that the organization anonymously comments negatively about those who leave the Church is delusional and borders on paranoia."

Raised Roman Catholic, Kidman became a Scientologist during her decade-long marriage to Tom Cruise. After their divorce in 2001, she left the church (she married Keith Urban in a Roman Catholic ceremony) and has seldom talked about the religion. "I've chosen not to speak publicly about Scientology," she said. "I have two children [with Cruise] who are Scientologists — Connor and Isabella — and I utterly respect their beliefs."

Like Nicole Kidman, Holmes was raised Roman Catholic and converted to Scientology when she married Tom Cruise in 2006. She broke away from the religion after their 2012 divorce and unlike Kidman's children with the actor, Holmes and Cruise's daughter Suri has no affiliation with Scientology. Holmes has since rejoined the Roman Catholic Church.

Rogers was raised a Scientologist after her father, Philip C. Spickler, became interested in it, and she became a highly trained auditor for the church. She introduced her ex-husband Tom Cruise to the religion when they started dating in the '80s. It's unclear when Rogers left the church, but a 2012 Vanity Fair Scientology exposeé claimed that she had an unfavorable view of leader David Miscavige, who reportedly pushed for Rogers and Cruise to divorce so the actor could marry Nicole Kidman. (Rogers' father also left the church in the '80s, after which he was declared a Suppressive Person.)

The comedian studied the religion in the '70s after being introduced to it by his high school auto mechanics teacher, and he credits it for helping him with his stand-up. "Believe it or not ... it’s extremely intellectual and clinical in its approach to problem-solving, which really appealed to me," he told Parade in 2007. "In my early years of stand-up, it was very helpful. I took a couple of courses. One of them was in communication, and I learned some things about communication that really got my act going." Seinfeld eventually moved on. "I was kind of flitting from thing to thing," he explained to Access Hollywood. "I was interested in exploring."

Though she has not officially commented, Presley used other creative ways to strongly suggest that she has left the church. Her song "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet," from her 2012 album Storm & Grace, includes the lyrics, "Churches, they don’t have a soul / Soup for sale without a bowl / Religion so corrupt and running lives / Farewell, fair weathered friends / I can't say I'll miss you in the end." She also deleted all traces of Scientology from her website. (Her mother, Priscilla Presley, is still a member.)

The actor, who has appeared in Thelma & Louise and G.I. Jane, became a Scientologist in 1994 and promoted it so much that he said David Miscavige called him the "poster boy for Scientology." Beghe left in 2007 and started heavily criticizing the religion. In an interview with Xenu TV, Beghe said Scientology is "destructive and a rip-off" and that "it stunts your evolution."

According to Vanity Fair's 2012 Scientology exposé, the How I Met Your Mother and Homeland actress was handpicked by the church to date and marry Tom Cruise in November 2004. In January 2005, she reportedly ran afoul of the church after unintentionally insulting David Miscavige by saying, "Excuse me?" She was subsequently sent to a Scientology center, where she had to scrub toilets with a toothbrush, clean bathroom tiles with acid and dig ditches in the middle of the night. Paul Haggis backed the Vanity Fair report and said that Boniadi left the church after futilely trying to "handle this injustice internally."

The Oscar winner studied Scientology, but ultimately decided against it. "I read Dianetics by L. Ron Hubbard, I got a couple of videos and I took it all in," he told Interview in 2005. "It just seems like a religion that is perfect for people who feel like they need a grounding, who feel that the world has run off on them. I've discussed this with Scientologists, and they don't disagree. So, for a certain type of person, that's great."

After a 2007 New York Times article said that Tambor was a Scientologist, the Arrested Development star released a statement: "I took some Scientology classes at one time, studied Scientology for a while, but no more. I have nothing against it, but I am no longer a Scientologist."

The late Dirty Dancing star told The St. Petersburg Times (now The Tampa Bay Times) in 1989 that he flirted with the religion after his father's death. "I've always felt there was something different in [my personality], but I was scared to look for fear I wouldn't find anything," he said. "That's the reason I got into Buddhism, took EST training, was into therapy, into Scientology, into Transcendental Meditation. I was trying to support that side of myself."

Moore was recruited by the church and has been seen at the church's Celebrity Centre in Los Angeles. Her then-husband Bruce Willis reportedly talked her out of completely joining because he didn't want their three daughters associated with Scientology. Moore, who later embraced Kabbalah, was allegedly pursued again by the church, including by Scientologist pal Kelly Preston, after her split from Ashton Kutcher.

In his 2004 book, Nothing Is Impossible: Reflections on a New Life, the erstwhile Superman wrote that he was recruited by the church for "training" in 1975. After revealing his drug history to his auditor in "four or five sessions," he was asked to remember his past lives, which was when his "growing skepticism about Scientology and my training as an actor took over." The late actor made up a story about being an ancient Greek warrior, which his auditor bought. "I didn't expect my auditor to be familiar with Greek mythology; I was simply relying on her ability, assisted by the E-Meter, to discern the truth," Reeve wrote. "The fact that I got away with a blatant fabrication completely devalued my belief in the process."

The American Idol runner-up took courses in 2005 after she started dating a Scientologist. "So I took like a couple of courses and things like that," she told Larry King in 2006. "And they put my name on the Internet. They totally exposed me, and so everybody thought I was a Scientologist. And I am no longer affiliated with Scientology."

The Soap star revealed in a 1993 Premiere exposé that she was a Scientologist for seven years. "The first time I walked in those doors, they said, 'Just give us all the money in your bank account. You'll get it back tenfold,'" she said. "It took me years before I decided to quit. I guess finally I was so fed up with being afraid. You've heard all these horror stories ... I believed them." Fearing a libel suit from the church, which attacked the piece and the magazine, Premiere ran a rebuttal piece by David Miscavige, but cut it down from three pages to two.
