Jared Leto shares his Oscar and more behind-the-scenes tidbits from film's biggest night
The first winner of the night wanted to share his award with the entire press room, passing it around to reporters to hold. "I think this is the first person to give away their Oscar for an orgy in the press room. Who's your favorite Oscar winner tonight?" Leto asked. "I'm going to be celebrating until the break of dawn. Trust me. Look me in the eyes and see that I will revel tonight. If they only knew what was going to happen tonight."
Adruitha Lee and Robin Matthews (Best Makeup and Hairstyling for Dallas Buyers Club) Working on a $250 budget was easy for the Dallas Buyers Club team, thanks to the dedication of both Matthew McConaughy and Jared Leto, who actually arrived as his character Rayon. "We never met Jared until last week," Lee said. "He was already in high heels… and was just waiting for me to pull a couple of wigs." In fact, Matthews says Leto was even game to wax off his eyebrows pretty much on Day 1. "'Yeah, I've just waxed my entire body, so why not go for broke?'" Matthews recalls the Oscar-winning actor saying.
Lupita Nyong'o (Best Supporting Actress for 12 Years a Slave) "I felt quite fabulous," Nyong'o said of being hugged by Liza Minnelli as she went up to accept her award. "I'm a little dazed. I can't believe this is in my hands. I can't believe this is real life. I'm really overwhelmed... You hear people wanting you to win and predicting you to win, but it's just not real until you hear Christoph Waltz say your name. I'm so happy to be holding this golden man."
Sorry, George Clooney! "All of this is thanks to Sandra Bullock; everything we were doing was honoring Sandra Bullock's performance," Cuaron said of his muse.
Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez (Best Original Song for "Let It Go" from Frozen) Anderson-Lopez had a little present prepared for her husband in case the couple did win the Oscar, which would induct him into the very rare club of EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony) winners. "The girls and I made something for you, Bobby, just in case this moment happened," she said, hanging an EGOT necklace on her husband. "It's made of pasta."
Despite giving a performance that practically brought to life an inanimate character, Scarlett Johansson could not be nominated for her voiceover work in Her, which was a shame to screenwriter Jonze. "I saw what she did and loved what she did and I was moved and affected by watching her create that character even though it was just a voice," Jonze said.
Blanchett capped off the night with a bit of fun backstage. She first played coy on her reasoning for saying "hashtag suck it Julia" during her acceptance speech. "It happened in the bar with Miss Roberts, and that's all I'm prepared to say." She also detailed dealing with Oscar nerves by getting a massage. She was "pummeled like Kobe beef." And when a reporter pointed out that she was the first Australian to win two Oscars in an acting category, she joked, "Don't you f---ing forget it."
Matthew McConaughey (Best Leading Actor for Dallas Buyers Club) The bad news is that McConaughey reiterated that he would not return for True Detective's second season. The good news is that he won an Oscar on his very first nomination. "I did not expect it. It's a bit of the end of a journey with this film," he said, explaining that he came across this script five years ago. "The script, no one wanted to make it… and I'm standing here now, and I got a prize for excellence for the work I do for something that's not my job… it's my career."
The producers may be riding high from winning an Oscar for Best Picture, but, for Brad Pitt, it was just another normal day. "I had to clean up dog poop today in my bedroom," he said, noting that he will be celebrating with Angelina Jolie after the show. "When the film was complete, we also had this extraordinary feeling knowing that this is a film that has legs and will be around for many, many years and that's the biggest prize."
