Lauren Bacall had "The Look" and voice of legends

Even as a young actress, Bacall was known for her low, husky voice that accompanied her signature sultry look — chin down, eyes cast up — that earned her the nickname "The Look."

Her first film boasts one of film's most quoted lines

At the tender age of 19, Bacall landed a role in war-romance drama To Have and Have Not, in which her character famously told Humphrey Bogart's boat captain, "You know how to whistle, don't you, Steven? You just put your lips together and ... blow." The quote made the cut on AFI's 100 Years... 100 Movie Quotes list at No. 34.

Her romance with Humphrey Bogart was the stuff of legends

Although Bogart was married at the time, he left his wife for Bacall after they met on To Have and Have Not. They wed despite their 25-year age difference, and remained together until his death. Decades later, Bacall always continued to honor his memory. "Losing Bogey was horrible, obviously. Because he was young. And because he gave me my life," she told Larry King in 2005. "I don't know what would have happened to me if I hadn't met him. I would have had a completely different kind of life. He changed me, he gave me everything and he was an extraordinary man."

She was never "Lauren"

"I was Betty Bacall always. And Lauren was Howard Hawks... he felt that Lauren Bacall was better sounding than Betty Bacall," she said in a 2005 CNN interview with Larry King. "He had a vision of his own. He was a Svengali. He wanted to mold me. He wanted to control me. And he did until Mr. Bogart got involved."

She was outspoken...

In her Larry King interview, she famously declared, "I'm a total Democrat. I'm anti-Republican. And it's only fair that you know it . . . I'm liberal. The L word!... Being a liberal is the best thing on earth you can be. You are welcoming to everyone when you're a liberal. You do not have a small mind." ... and didn't pull punches "When you talk about a great actor, you're not talking about Tom Cruise," she told Time in 2005. "His whole behavior is so shocking. It's inappropriate and vulgar and absolutely unacceptable to use your private life to sell anything commercially, but I think it's kind of a sickness."

She has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

In 1991, Bacall received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1724 Vine Street just south of the Capitol Records building. In her memoir, By Myself and Then Some, which won the National Book Award, she said, "Imagination is the highest kite that can fly."
