Evan Rachel Wood, Westworld

Westworld's hosts aren't the only things that look real enough to fool the most astute observer. We never would have known Wood was wearing a wig for her role as the park's first host, Delores. Then again, nothing is ever as it seems in Westworld.

2 of 47 Netflix, Jim Spellman/Getty Images

Mike Colter, Luke Cage

With all the money Marvel and Netflix have, we don't understand why they would give these cheap-looking hairpieces to Colter. And Luke Cage should be thanking his lucky stars that his unbreakable skin doesn't also cover unbreakable hair folicles, or else he would have been stuck with this horrible look for all eternity.

3 of 47 FX, Todd Williamson/Getty Images

Sarah Paulson, American Horror Story: Roanoke

The sixth season of American Horror Story is the franchise's most mysterious yet, but one thing's for certain: Paulson's wig is top-notch. And while her perfect blonde waves feel out of place in the dingy Roanoke farmhouse, the expertly coiffed wig actually makes perfect sense since Paulson isn't playing a frazzled wife being tormented by ghosts - she's playing an actress playing a frazzled wife tormented by ghosts in dramatic reenactments, and everything looks more glamorous on TV.

4 of 47 Curtis Baker/Netflix, Jason LaVeris/FilmMagic

Millie Bobby Brown, Stranger Things

Unlike most wigs on TV, the blonde 'do Eleven sported to blend in as a totally normal and not at all telekinetic kid on Netflix's breakout summer hit Stranger Things wasn't meant to look remotely realistic -- or even that good -- and that's precisely why we love it. Found in the depth of Mike's house, the wig did what it needed to do. But to be honest, Eleven was so cool that we didn't really care what she looked like.

Emilia Clarke, Game of Thrones

Yes, we have dragon-sized hair envy when it comes to the Mother of Dragons. If we had those white-gold locks, we could take on any number of bloodthirsty armies and pretenders to the Iron Throne. And though she's been traveling with the Dothraki and exposed to the elements, even her misplaced strands look artful and luxurious. We chalk that up to the blood of the dragon running through the roots of those Targaryen follicles. All hail, Dany, the most well-tressed in the seven kingdoms and beyond! It is known.
6 of 47 HBO; Jon Kopaloff/FilmMagic

Lena Headey, Game of Thrones

As Westeros' Queen Regent, Cersei has appropriately regal hair — bountiful and golden, just like the Lannisters' riches. It's clear that as a woman of leisure and scheming, she has plenty of time for courtly grooming and the latest conditioning rinses. No wonder her brother Jaime can't resist!
7 of 47 Cate Cameron/The CW

Stephen Amell, Arrow

When Oli has the hood on, he becomes a hero. When he has his wig on, he becomes ... hard to look at. Ranging from full-on yeti to a pseudo-bowl cut to awkward emo shag, Oliver's various island 'dos do no justice to the handsome star. And while it's well and good he spent his time on the island perfecting his vigilante skills, could he not have taken a little more pride in looking good while he did it?
8 of 47 Cate Cameron/The CW, Alexander Tamargo/WireImage

Katie Cassidy, Arrow

It's confusing enough that Laurel Lance decided to fight crime in a platinum blonde wig, but her decision to not even pick a nice looking wig is the biggest mystery here.

9 of 47 Davide Giesbrecht/NBC; Getty Images

Megan Boone, The Blacklist

James Spader's lack of hair got all the attention in the lead-up to the NBC drama's premiere, but Boone has since stolen his follicular thunder. Though the actress rocks a chic short 'do in real life, she wears a mousy brown wig to give her neophyte FBI agent Elizabeth Keen a younger, more naive look. Granted we've never been in the field, but isn't short hair easier to manage while chasing baddies? And if she must have long hair, at least give the girl some volume!
10 of 47 Dean Buscher/The CW, Jerod Harris/Getty Images

Danielle Panabaker, The Flash

The worst thing about Caitlin Snow's evil Earth-2 doppelganger is her horrible wig. Killer Frost's voluminous blonde curls are less believable than a world in which superheroes, villains and time travel are the norm.

11 of 47 Mitch Haaseth/ABC, Splash

Viola Davis, How to Get Away with Murder

Professor Annalise Keating may know how to get away with murder, but we're not about to let ABC get away with giving her that shoddy, poorly styled wig. In real life, Davis has had far more put-together looks, ranging from charming chin-length pixie cuts to her stunning natural 'do. Fortunately, it looks like this small-screen law professor got some follicular counsel because by the series' second episode, the wig made a better case for itself.
12 of 47 Diyah Pera/The CW, Frazer Harrison/Getty Images

Rose McIver, iZombie

Platinum blonde has always been associated with high fashion, but that is so not the case here. We get that she's busy saving lives and stifling her instinctual zombie urges, but damn girl, get yourself some conditioner!

13 of 47 FOX, Laura Cavanaugh/FilmMagic

Jada Pinkett-Smith, Gotham

Villains as bad as Fish Mooney need a hairstyle with edge, which is why the former Queen of Gotham rocks some flashy red fringe. Sure, it's little Hot Topic, but considering the look Penguin sports, we think Fish looks pretty darn great.

14 of 47 Netflix, Sean Zanni/Patrick McMullan via Getty Images

Herizen Guardiola, The Get Down

Herizen Guardiola famously got to rock some iconic period fashions in The Get Down, with producers outfitting her in real-life archival Halston and Diane Von Furstenberg pieces to nail her 70s disco diva looks. But the clothes alone didn't make the woman. The self-described real-life tomboy rocked some headpieces that made her character come alive too, including a homely, preachers-daughter 'do at the beginning of the series and, as she embraces stardom, a sexy show-stopping wig that screams Studio 54.

15 of 47 FX, Michael Tran/FilmMagic

Sarah Paulson, The People v OJ Simpson

Marcia Clark is as known for her hair as she is her role in the O.J. Simpson trial, so it makes sense that the People vs. O.J. Simpson producers took great care crafting the four wigs Paulson wore for the Emmy-nominated series. They even enlisted the help of Clark's original hair stylist to make them as accurate as possible.

16 of 47 FX, SBN/Star Max/GC Images

John Travolta, The People v OJ Simpson

While playing Robert Shapiro, Travolta wore two of the world's tiniest wigs on his eyebrows. And though they may have been small, the brow toupees had a huge impact on transforming Travolta into the legendary defense attorney.

17 of 47 Ron Tom/ABC via Getty Images, Tommaso Boddi/WireImage

Guillermo Diaz, Scandal

Although Scandal is famous for its fashion, it needs to seriously up its wig game. Poor Guillermo Diaz got stuck with this scraggly wig and fake beard for flashback scenes that revealed Huck's backstory. At least the hilarious look made for some serious must-see TV as Twitter went wild over the ludicrous locks.

18 of 47 Jack Rowand/ABC, Splash

Josh Dallas, Once Upon a Time

Before this prince became so charming, he was just a lowly shepherd with little ambition and a lot of hair. The unruly mess reflected his conflicted life, and by the time he was ready to be shorn like the very sheep he herded, he was also primed to become the man who one day would win the heart of Snow White. And that's mutton to sneeze at!
19 of 47 BBC America, Corbis

Tatiana Maslany, Orphan Black

Although we give full credit to Maslany for her brilliant acting skills to portray the multiple clones on her BBC America science-fiction thriller, we would be remiss to not give a nod to the hair department, which helps realize the distinct persoanalities. Rachel's bob is as severe as her demeanor, while Cosima's dreadlocks reflect her risk-taking behaviors. And Helena? Well, we only have to witness her eating jello or perhaps fried chicken to understand that the blonde mop is the only suitable look for this wild child.
20 of 47 HBO, Corbis

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep

Although Selina Meyer often felt disregarded as vice president, once she decided to make a bid for the presidency, her attitude — and look — got a makeover. Designer duds, confident colors and sexy, strappy heels were just the beginning, but the biggest change came for the big debate: a stylish, no-nonsense pixie cut! "This is the haircut that your head has always wanted but was too afraid to ask for," observes her chief of staff. Hail to the chief indeed!
21 of 47 Bernard Walsh/HISTORY, Corbis

Travis Fimmel, Vikings

Although Fimmel's signature long locks made him famous during his Calvin Klein underwear modeling days, his hair was barely an inch long when he started Vikings, which at least enabled the series to attach hair extensions into a long, badass mohawk. It's doubtful that this look is historically accurate, but we're not going to complain about anything that highlights this Norseman's piercing blue eyes.
22 of 47 FOX, JB Lacroix/WireImage

Taraji P. Henson, Empire

Like everything about Empire, Cookie's wigs are hit or miss - especially when we get flashbacks to Cookie's life pre-fame. But Taraji P. Henson pulls off each of Cookie's looks with such confidence that even her more raggedy wigs somehow come off as fabulous.

23 of 47 Brownie Harris/Fox; Tim Whitby/Getty Images

Tom Mison, Sleepy Hollow

Sleepy Hollow could have been a cheesy nightmare, but somehow it's made us believe in a Revolutionary soldier fighting demons in modern day. This is thanks in part to Mison's wig, which forgoes costume curls in favor of ratty realness that we'd love to run our fingers through (if they wouldn't get caught up in those sexy tangles).
24 of 47 Logo, Ray Tamarra/GC Images

RuPaul, RuPaul’s Drag Race

It should come as no surprise that, as America's first drag superstar and noted supermodel of the world, RuPaul has sported some seriously sickening wigs over the years. Whether she's rocking an up-do, loose waves or an afro, we always say "Shantay you stay" to Ru's 'dos.

25 of 47 Craig Blankenhorn/FX

Matthew Rhys, The Americans-

The Americans is not just some '80s-set, KGB drama and exploration of marriage. It's also a wig's best friend. Few shows have employed faux follicles so generously and perfectly. Rhys' wigs have ranged from tawdry to downright sexy, and yes, he plays favorites. "My favorite is in the first episode ... I had a shoulder-length one, a goatee and a mustache," he told TVGuide.com. "It was very dirty and grungy. I named it The Spaniard."
26 of 47 Craig Blankenhorn/FX

Keri Russell, The Americans

Like Rhys, Russell has donned her share of fantastic wigs. A sleek, long black one to play a sultry vixen? Check. A short, frayed one to look like a granny? Check. A blonde bob not unlike that of a '70s folk icon? Check. "My favorite wig is the one where Matthew calls me John Denver," Russell told TVGuide.com. "I think it's a very good look for me." Our only wish for Season 2? That Russell slips on a short-haired Felicity wig!

Fred Armisen, Portlandia

The hair work in Portlandia isn't supposed to be good, which is exactly why all the rugs that Fred Armisen (and Carrie Brownstein) wear are fantastic. Whether he's playing a lesbian bookstore owner, a picky girlfriend to a macho sex machine or just your run-of-the-mill artisan pickler and chicken farmer, Fred's wigs have that fresh-out-of-the-vintage-store-bargain-bin look and allow him to transform into any one of Portlandia's wacky residents.

28 of 47 Jeffrey Neira/CBS; Theo Wargo/WireImage

Julianna Margulies, The Good Wife

After rising to fame as Country General Hospital's most beloved (curly-haired) nurse on ER, it's understandable why the Emmy winner wanted to ditch her signature ringlets for her next major TV role. But Margulies' wig was so convincing that viewers didn't know she was wearing a hairpiece until the end of Season 1, when one of the executive producers revealed Florrick's straight locks weren't natural. The only time throughout the CBS drama's five seasons that viewers took issue with the wig was during Alicia's brief flirtation with bangs at the start of Season 3.
29 of 47 Lou Rocco/ABC

Sherri Shepherd, The View

Shepherd has never hidden the fact she wears wigs on the ABC talk show. In fact, she loves her hairpieces so much, she even designed her own line of hairpieces. Shepherd's wigs give her flexibility those who go au natural are denied. On any given day, she can go from short to long to brunette to blonde and back again.
30 of 47 HBO; Cindy Ord/Getty Images

Gretchen Mol, Boardwalk Empire

A natural blonde, Mol decided to let her hair off the hook by skipping the dye and going straight for the wig. But you'd never know! Mol looks perfect as a redhead and her flapper curls are a natural fit for the Prohibition drama.
31 of 47 BBC America; Angela Weiss/Getty Images

Rob James-Collier, Downton Abbey

Downton fans might notice something's different with Thomas this year. For the fourth season, James-Collier has to wear a wig after shaving his head for another role. To ensure the wig didn't look too out of place, the series spared no expense on the hairpiece, which cost roughly $6,200.
32 of 47 Bob Mahoney/The CW

Joseph Morgan, The Originals

Everyone goes through an awkward phase. Thankfully for Klaus, there weren't cameras around to capture his. The typically sexy vamp's wavy weave totally cramps his bad boy style and makes him look more like a renaissance fair extra than the original evil.
33 of 47 Annette Brown/The CW; Annette Brown/The CW

Daniel Gillies, The Originals

Flashbacks can add so much to a character. Unfortunately for Elijah, it also shows us hairstyles we'd rather forget. Even Gillies sees the humor in his collection of wigs. "I feel like the Potato Head-vampire," he said. "As we venture further through history, we're only going to find more absurdities upon my crown."
34 of 47 Wendy Willaims Show

Wendy Williams, The Wendy Williams Show

A self-proclaimed "wigologist," it's no surprise that Williams has her own line of hairpieces. In fact, Williams takes her wigs so seriously she doesn't even like to eat when she's in her "wig zone." While Williams' big wigs fit her big personality, she doesn't understand that what's good for the goose isn't always good for the gander. In 2012, Williams stirred up controversy when she criticized Viola Davis saying natural hair isn't formal.
35 of 47 Greg Gayne/Fox; Fox

Mindy Kaling, The Mindy Project

No wig might be as polarizing as Mindy's pixie cut. After chopping off her hair in a romantic grand gesture, Danny couldn't help but proclaim, "I hate it so much!" But to be honest, we're kind of into it! It's nice for Mindy to have a haircut as fashion forward as her wardrobe.
36 of 47 Carnival Film & Television for Masterpiece; Ben Pruchnie/Getty Images

Maggie Smith, Downton Abbey

In real life, Smith has an adorable, short, low-maintenance 'do, so it's no surprise that for her role as the Dowager Countess the actress didn't opt to grow her hair out. Instead, she gets to play dress up with an array of elaborate and swoon-worthy wigs worthy of Pinterest how-to's.
37 of 47 Isabella Vosmikova/Braco

Kim Zolciak, The Real Housewives of Atlanta

After tearfully confessing during the Season 1 reunion to wearing a wig because an illness made her hair fall out, Zolciak learned to embrace her love of fake hairpieces and launched her own premium wig line. Sadly, Kim's affinity for wigs also came back to bite her, particularly when she got into a fight with castmate Sheree Whitfield, who pulled at Kim's wig on camera in retaliation. But viewers didn't really get to see what was underneath until 2012, when Zolciack took off her wig for the first time on camera on her spin-off, Don't Be Tardy for the Wedding to reveal ... a full head of beautiful blonde hair. Seriously?!

Aaron Paul, Breaking Bad

It only takes one look for Walter (Bryan Cranston) to realize that Jesse has been kept like a slave and forced to cook meth for the neo-Nazis in the Breaking Bad season finale. Is it his hair? Probably. Jesse is last seen driving away from the house like a bat out of hell, and we hope he's on his way to get that stringy mess taken care of.
39 of 47 Ursula Coyote/AMC; AMC

Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad

Apparently there wasn't time to visit a barber in the several months Walter White spent in rural New Hampshire. His scruffy lumberjack appearance in the series finale is quite a departure from the bald badass we've grown accustomed to in recent seasons — but maybe that's fitting.
40 of 47 CBS; Eric McCandless/CBS

Alyson Hannigan, How I Met Your Mother

Thanks to HIMYM's time-jumps and Hannigan's own real-life hair changes, the actress has had to put on quite a few wigs for continuity purposes. But if there's one we could do without ever seeing again, it's College Lily's blunt pageboy 'do that screams more "bad dye job" than "punk rock."
41 of 47 Hulu, Rommel Demano/Getty Images

Corey Stoll, The Strain

Following an award-worthy run on House of Cards, Stoll and his beautiful bald head leveraged the success into a lead role on FX's vampire drama. There was just one catch: He had to wear an embarrassing hairpiece that looked like a back-alley hairplug operation gone even awry. Producers said the wig was necessary because Stoll's character Eph would "undergo a transformation" later, and when Eph had to go fugitive and shaved his head in Season 2, the hair piece was finally -- and thankfully -- sent to bad-wig heaven.

42 of 47 HBO, Vera Anderson/WireImage

Woody Harrelson, True Detective

The dual timelines of HBO's crime drama meant that the hair and makeup departments needed to youngify the show's two stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. Hey, they tried. Matty got away with an outlandish combo of pornstache and ponytail and an insane performance, but Woody had a more clean-cut look that worked in some scenes and set off wig alerts everywhere in others. Though to be fair, no one's hair is safe in the Louisiana humidity.

43 of 47 Norman Jean Roy/ABC via Getty Images, VALERIE MACON/AFP/Getty Images

Jennifer Garner, Alias

Sydney Bristow wore many wigs over the course of Alias' run, but nothing is more iconic than this red wig - and for good reason! This crimson lob helped transform Jennifer Garner from the girl next door into a genuine badass.

44 of 47 Amazon, Frazer Harrison/NBCUniversal/NBCU Photo Bank via Getty Images

Kristen Bell, Veronica Mars

Everybody loves a good flashback wig, but we're glad this one stayed in the past! Before Veronica became the jaded P.I. we know and love, she was a fairly plain girl with some very plain hair.

45 of 47 Hulu, Imeh Akpanudosen/Getty Images

James Marsters, Angel

Before he became one of the world's most notorious vamps, Spike was an aspiring poet named William. And while it was funny enough to see Spike as a struggling artist, it was his floppy hair that makes us chuckle the most.

wigs-bob-odenkirk.jpg

Bob Odenkirk, Better Call Saul

Slippin' Jimmy wouldn't have to con us into believing that he doesn't wear a wig. The toupee Bob Odenkirk wears on Better Call Saul is so convincing that it genuinely makes the actor look years younger for the 2002-set Breaking Bad prequel.

47 of 47 HBO, Lalo Yasky/Getty Images

Alexander Skarsgard, True Blood

Before Eric Northman settled on the slicked-back style he's known for, he had centuries to experiment with his hair. That means he also had centuries to make some serious hair mistakes. Every time the HBO drama featured an Eric flashback, fans were subjected so some seriously questionable looks that made us grateful he eventually reached for the scissors.
