David Beckham is going to the Olympics - but he won't be competing in any events.

The soccer Adonis will participate in the closing ceremony of the Beijing Olympics to showcase the 2012 host city of London, People reports.

Olympic tradition calls for the torch to be passed from the current host nation to a representative of the next host nation, and Olympic officials feel like British-born Beckham is the man for the job.

The 34-year-old had been instrumental in helping London secure the 2012 Games over the past decade and is said to be "proud" of their achievement.

"He was very involved in the London bid to get it, and as a Londoner he is incredibly proud that the Olympics will be in London," a source said. "He is passionate about it and looking forward to the games in 2012."

The Olympic closing ceremony takes place Aug. 24. - Joyce Eng
